Group,

I setup a chat system.  When you login, you will see a 'Chat' icon appear next to the Logout icon on the forum menu.  This will load up a java applet that connects you to an SOHC/4 chat room at everywherechat.com.

Give it a whirl.  Let me know what you think.

I clicked on the chat & got diverted to a page where nothing happened.
Looks like the homepage header with a big writing space but nothing works.

Does your browser support Java applets?  You are likely going to see a blank window unless it does.

We'll have to get more people trying this out and see whether there are universal problems or whether it is going to be a problem for certain browsers or whatever.  Right now, it is falling into one of those 'It works for me' sort of things since I have gotten in just fine using Firefox, Netscape 8. and IE 6.

your web browser security could be stopping the Java app to load, try resetting your security and it should work, I had to allow the app to run before it would work. ;)

One thing that maybe could be done is to have a little window showing who is on chat. This would only come up for members or course, if that is workable. This would be a nice way to tell if it worth logging into the chat.

Sort of worked for me..maybe. The Java applet loads and I can sign-in. So far nobody on when I've done this. However, when I close the chat window, I always get the following error display, but I don't see that it causes any problems while I'm logged in. Having never used chat before, perhaps I'm not exiting correctly?? or is it trying to tell me something else??
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Good idea.  If it is possible...

Whenever we had the chat setup before , there were lots of 'Anyone here' posts and sometimes, usually early in the AM (4-5am EST), there were some active chats.  One idea tossed around in the past was to organize chats on particular topics.

Well, this whole forum thing is a bit like chatting already - see, we´re even doing it now!! But we COULD have a workable chat if we used it as Glenn suggests at certain predetermined times, a few times a year. Sooo, if we had a Chat Moderator (TM) who could say, "Right, Christmas, everybodies home, lets have our Christmas Chat 2005 on Tuesday at 6 EST with no subject at all, just let it go off at a tangent like one of Terry of OZ´s ramblings, grab a coupla beers and be there!" or "Spring! Hey, remember the Spring Chat 2006. Saturday 6EST, grab a coupla beers and be there!" it COULD be a different way of meeting and could be kinda fun....
