Good multimeter choice
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:19:41 AM »
Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent multimeter for a fair price ($15-50)?  I need to pick one up so I can begin troubleshooting electrical issues, but I am not sure of necessary features/settings.  Thanks for any suggestions.

I picked up a digital multimeter from Checker Auto for 30 bucks, covers everything I've needed to test so far.  Any automotive store should have a few to choose from.

Good luck with the testing.

I'm thinking of getting a Harbor Freight tattoo.  I love that place.

Here's a new $30 multimeter with a dwell meter and thermocouple adapter.

I've had a $20 multimeter from HF for several years.  It's nicknamed the "Fruke" (Chinese Fluke knockoff) at work.  Doesn't have all the certifications and listings of a major brand like Fluke, but it's never lied to me.

Bought one from Murray's Auto for less then $20, works great.  Better then the cheapo one they sell at the hardware store for $40.

any meter will work, but a good set of leads is very helpful. Such as alligator clips and fine pointed ones.

It should be capable of measuring multiple ranges of volts, ohms, and amps.  AC and DC. A "continuity buzzer" is a nice bonus too.

Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Radio Shack 22-811  - about 50 bucks.

Good all-round VOM  It has a capacitance meter for the condenser and a diode checker.
