Knocking/clapping noise 1984 CB650

First off, I was recommended here from another forum. Awesome place!  8)

Anyways, I've got this obsession...motorcycles. I race off-road, enduros, hare scrambles, desert and then motocross. For some time now I've been wanting a street bike to cruise around town. I supermotarded my KDX and rode that around for awhile but I'd rather have something more street worthy.

A coworker of mine has a 1984 CB650 in fairly good condition considering it's age. It could use a nice wash and front tire but everything else looks to be tiptop. It starts up right up, and purrs. Strange thing though is when the RPMs go above 3k the engine starts making this noise. It sounds to me like two metal pieces tapping each other. It runs great though even with this knock. It's just annoying though. He was thinking it was something with the lifters, could this be? I was told on another forum to buy it and then change the oil a few times to see if it goes away. I was reading somewhere else that this is a common issue with the bikes when they reach a certain mileage (forgot to check this one out, doh!). Any other ideas?

He wants $300 for this bike. Is that a reasonable price when factoring in the knock?

Thank you! I appreciate the help.  8)

Oops! I just realized I put this in the wrong section. 1984 CB650s weren't SOHC...
