Drill through the drain bolt and tap it for a 8mm bolt. Put a copper crush washer under the bolt. That's the cheapest thing I can think of.

don't want to aggravate, but what's even more serious is: when was the last time the guy changed the oil?

Wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the valve cover off and see how's the cam like, it's among the first things to suffer from bad oil an relatively, easy to access.

Dont ask me how I know please....

make sure you put there the best oil that you can get at least.

$15 shipped is pretty cheap, so that's the way that I would go.

BTW, scanning the gasket is plain genius!

I'm using Mobil1 synthetic for one of my bikes and Exxon 20-50 in another. Use the best you can afford from a brand you trust. Just be sure it doesn't have extra additives. I forget what they're called just now. Bikes have wet clutches that can be adversly affected by those additives.

I would suggest a small caliber with a hollow point bullet. This way the undertaker can putty up the hole and you can have the lid open and be properly viewed. Fellows may also wish to come by place a small sprig in there.  ;D

Well... It's obvious, if the PO had used decent oil, this would never have happened. ::) ::) ::)

Speaking of, did you all see the "expert's" admonition to "Don't use synthetic in any CB750 honda.  The clutch will slip and you'll be wasting your money" published in this month's Classic Bike (page 89)?

I haven't yet gotten around to writing a reply, but maybe we should flood them with responses...

Meh, not quite contentious enough.  You'd  have to say something like, "if the PO had used synthetic oil, this would never have happened", to really get things going. :D

Just to keep adding fuel to the fire here is a note forwarded to me from a HD owners group. The spelling is on par for a HD group:

Ken - from P2P - found a Harlely Forum on the net and found out that Harley is no longer suggesting SYN 3 (somewhat synthetic - its a group III)  Mobil 1 , 20W-50 for bikes is a group IV, better oil for less $, but that is not what the fuss is all about.  The SYN 3 oil is too light of a vis for the tranny.  After reading for hours on this forum we came up with - Mobil 1  20W-50 for bikes or Mobil 1 15W-50 for race cars, $20.00 for 4 qts. at Wal Mart.  The only advantage is in the 15W and it gets to the upper parts of the engine sooner and thats where most wear occurs.  It also has less Molly and is less acidick.  We are putting Mobil 1 - 75/90 Gear Oil in the trans.  Makes it last longer and run cooler and quiter.  The reason for Harleys switch is they were getting reports of a lot of metal fillings when changing the trans.  Mobil 1 will stop that.  The forum also agrees that any good cheap dyno oil will do in the primary as it only lubs the chain.  20W-50 non synthetic was suggested.
Read the oil and related topics and make up your own mind.  I suggest a lot of research on this.
