1975 CB550F help needed
« on: September 21, 2007, 04:16:11 PM »
I need help from the collective minds of the site    I picked up a 75 cb550f Cheap( 200.00) it runs ,but while looking at rear brake foot pedal  where the coiled spring sits it looks like it broke once in its life and someone welded it back together and now the pedal sits a lil higher then it should anyone have a picture of the pedal assemble that they would like to post so i can see and make sure. I would post a pic of it but the girlfriend lost the cable for my camera.

I have a 76 CB550F. Here's a picture. Pedal sits just a bit higher than the peg. I imagine the 75 isn't much different, if any.

If the pedal is still usable, you might try removing the pinch bolt, then the pedal and reinstalling on a different spot on the splined shaft to lower it. Make a mark first before you remove the pedal. There is also a 6mm pedal stop bolt you can adjust some.

Or you can look for another used pedal.

From the pics it looks like the travel adjustment stopper bolt is way out of adjustment or missing altogeather ???

However, It looks like the splines might be indexed properly because the lever on the inside of the swing arm is also tilted way back. Sorry, but I'm not sure how the set up is on a 550, all I have to refrence is my 350f which has the stopper bolt on the inside of the swingarm on the inner part of that lever assembly.

Just took this pic of mine, according to my manual the 550 uses the same stopper setup.

after looking at mine and comparing to the pics mine don't have the stopper setup and checking over the frame i found no tell tale traces of it even having one no PO mods or anything.

and after checking the parts list  it looks like brake setup is off of a 750 (brake spline has 1 ears and a 550 has 2 ears) mine has 1 ears

In the second of your fuzzy pics you can see a 10mm spanner size nut with, what ought to be a bolt through it.

That is the stop adjuster and you unlock the nut and srew down the bolt to lower the pedal (dont forget to lock up the nut when finished!)

The stop adjuster bolt dont touch any part of the brake assemble, From the wear on the brake arm  it looks like it has been that way for awhile

Is your frame an F model or a K model?

It looks as if the PO installed a 4-1 off of an F model onto a K frame , straight kicker and brake pedal vs the curved ones off an F to clear the header.

The Bike was sold to me under the pretense of it being a 550F. The vin is cb550121****. two pages i checked for the vin info  one said it is a f model and the other said it is a k model .

The Vin tag will have an F for the F models.  Your vin is for a 75 K model.  Your brake arm is for an F model.  And the arm stops are in different places.  Inboard the frame for the F model.  Outboard the frame for the K model.

As Einyodeler said, the brake and kicker changes were to accomodate the four into one collector width of the F model.  But, there are corresponding frame features to make it all function properly.

Cheers,

thanks everyone for the help looks like i will be going to my local bike salvage yard and get parts for a K model and turn it to what it should be ,so there might be f parts coming up for sale soon.only weird thing is that the ignition key fits the gas tank and the seat and even put a chain guard off of a 550F ( has the factory sticker on it still) so the PO must of went to alot of trouble to try and turn it into an f .
