Watkins Glen
« on: September 24, 2007, 09:59:30 PM »
I went camping in Watkins Glen, NY ( http://nyfalls.com/watkinsglensp.html ) this weekend and saw lots of bikes cruising the area.  The NYS Finger Lake area is a popular ride.  There was a pack of a dozen 'Wings camping right down from me, one of which had one of those pop-up trailers - spiffy little thing.  Older folks from Jersey, very nice.  Didn't see any SOHC4's though.  But the top prize went to a group of 23 Triumph's that rode by me double-wide ~ quite the sight they were.  Wish I had my bike with me (insert: heavy sigh).

Seneca Lodge on non-racing weekends

The whole area is a zoo when NASCAR comes to town.  I've been by the Lodge a zillion times, but never in ~ how's the accommodations?

As an aside, I used to go to some of the races as a kid.  Our next-door neighbor was a volunteer fireman and would work some of the races as some sort of volunteer-fireman-volunteer-official.  I guess he watched the track for junk during the race.  My dad got tickets from him, so we went as guest-volunteer-fireman-volunteer-official; $5 apiece or so; basically got us through the front gate.  Of course, absolutely nobody knew what the heck they were, so he fast-talked us into pit-row finish line seats.  Then after the race, he would fast-talk us into the pits.  I remember helping push the Jag's back into their trailer, then drooling over the vintage Ferrari's.

-Used to go to the races myself, but it became too much--vintage races in September aren't bad , though.
Plenty of infield camping.
Seneca Lodge has good accomodations if you get one of the newer "motel" rooms.
The little hootches are pretty salty.
They even have an old cement swimming pool in the woods up in back.
And prime rib on Sat. & Sun.--My kind of place, actually.
--and you can walk right across the street into the State park.
