Air Cleaner Box
« on: September 21, 2007, 02:50:05 PM »
Is there any place to find an air box assy. For '76 CB550?  Seems to be a tough find.  I have four little cheap A$$ pods and it runs like poop.  Won't idle when warm and runs really rich.  I have some sort of after market pipes.  I would like to go back to stock pipes and stock air cleaner assy.  Any suggestions as to where I can find the air cleaner box assy.?

You're right! they are a tough find.  Almost as hard to find as stock pipes!  :o

You can check M/C junk yards most likely.  You could also re-jet your carbs to match your pod/pipe set-up as is.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Open airfilters and aftermarket pipes typically lean out the fuel condition. If your's is rich then maybe it just needs a little tuning.
that would be easier than finding the stock parts. ;)
here's the carb section of the FAQ if you have'nt found it yet:

Has anyone ever fabricated their own airbox for a CB550? Using sheet metal, silver soldering the seams, using some type of headers. This way it could be customized to use a commonly found air filter element. Just curious!

I am looking for an airbox for my 76 CB550 too. They seem hard to find and expensive. I thought maybe it wouldn't be a big deal to build one, and then if necessary, re-jet and tune the carbs.

I have the pods, and they really suck.

As long as its not a K3 model any 500/550 will fit the only difference on a 500 is that the big breather from the top of the engine does not connect to the bottom of the filter box.

ALSO you can now get just the box to carb connector rubbers seperate from Dave Silver (£18 per set) as a pattern part as these were never available from Honda
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

If you are running rich with pods, then you've got other carb problems going on that the airbox won't fix anyway.  Pods lean out the mixture over the stock airbox.

Pods work great if you take the time to re-jet.  I use 105 mains on my '77 CB550 and they work incredibly well.  I'll never go back to the stock airbox.

77 and 78 models have "lean burn" carbs, so jetting on your '76 may differ slightly.
