Your recommendation?
« on: September 22, 2007, 12:39:07 PM »
I have the urge to buy a timing light. It will be a Craftsman unless it wont do what is needed. Ive never used one but sure I will at some point, but what I need to know is will a light work the same way for a bike as with a car? Are there xtras that I should buy at the getgo to make the job easier? Whats everyone else using? Thanx

Craftsman is just fine, it will do cars and bikes and you shouldn't need any extra stuff to use it. I use a Ferret with the timing adjustment knob but for personal use you don't need anything fancy.

Timing lights only have three points for connecting to any vehicle.  Pos/Neg clamps for power, and a pick-up clamp for the spark plug wire. I'm using a cheap one I got at the auto parts store about eight years ago and it still works fine.

I have a Craftsman one and it has been just fine. THe only "nice" feature I would recommend is buying an inductive model. This kind has a large clip that fits over the plug wire and picks up the voltage signal, as opposed to splicing in a pickup between the plug and plug wire.

the only thing I have against the new craftsman lights is...the plastic.
Mine was fairly new years ago and it set on a header and melted the clamp to
the spark plug wire, now it's sorta aggravating to get it clamped on a wire :( :(

If you could find one with metal pickup and housing on the light that's what I'd go for. ;D

I was going to say something I thought was mildly amusing at the time,
but it really wasn't, so I won't.

Since most cars don't require periodic timing adjustments, you can usually find nice timing lights in pawn shaops really cheap. My buddy picked up a Snap-On timing gun with all the bells and whistles for 10 bucks.

I've been meaning to get one my self.  My former boss (at a M/C dealer) found one that used batteries(no hookup to bike for power) and is very small (fits in his tool roll for trips).  I'll find out make and model ASAP.

Whats with the fancy digital models? Theyre about 30 -40 bux more, but I doubt Id need what they have to offer over the regular models. If they really do offer anything other than an upgraded price... Anyone use the digital yet?

Cool... built-in tachometer with both 2- and 4-stroke settings! I want one!

Benefit- now you can monitor when the ignition advance kicks in and tops out (without having to try and lock the throttle at what you think is the correct RPM since the stock tacho might be 300 RPM off...)
