Life of 750 camchains?
« on: September 22, 2007, 02:56:45 PM »
What's the average mileage that the camchain should be replaced at?

ETA: I know my grammar is horrible, but I am tired and really don't care.  But I obviously care enough to post this edit, so never mind.  But I'm gonna post this anyway, so I guess I shouldn't say "never mind".  Dammit, I hate getting caught in a causal loop.

Anyway, the cam chain question is what's important here.

Most folks replace them when the motor is being rebuilt; mileage varies as does wear according to oil changes, flogging, etc.

Max i seen is 50,000 ish, but with the mileage we tend to do nowadays its every time the headgasket leaks

When in doubt, whip it out  ;)  Why not just replace it if you have the engine apart?! Get a Tsubaki heavy duty chain while you're at it. ~ $40.

replace it! what's $40 compared to a new engine...

-BUT- they honestly rarely do wear out, remember they are constantly bathed in oil (hopefully) so they do last a long time. but why take a chance.

I  had so much trouble with the lousy grammar and syntax, that I can't figure out what you want.  What was the question?   :D

Apart from the F2/F3 chains, (that wore a lot faster than the other models due to the harsher cam profile and heavier valve springs, even though they were supposedly fitted with heavier duty chain) you could expect many years from the OEM chain.

Like Bryan said, replace the chain next top-end rebuild, and while you're at it, replace the OEM cylinder studs with APE heavy duty items, and you won't need to worry about leaking head gaskets, either. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Somewere in a manual it says the camchain should be replaced @ 30,000 miles, but if you plan on removing the top end i would put one in while your in there ;), cheers mick.

The Tsubaki chain is easier on the tensioner because of the "box" shape of the links.
