Anyone try Emgo's imported shock replacements on a CB?

Hello,
  Being a 6'8" 300lb CB750 rider, I was curious if anyone as tried the replacement shocks crc2onlinecatalog.com has for sale?  Are they, indeed, heavier duty? At $90 they seem really reasonable!  Also, are they really a bolt on affair, with minimal to no grinding, etc?  Here are the shocks in question:  http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/rear_shocks.htm

Reports in UK of similar looking shocks are not good, Not good damping and leaked quickly also took an age to get warantee replacement

"Snake oil" mate, you have to be wary of a "one size fits all" shock, that caters for little twins up to big fat heavy fours, like these things. "Very good quality for $89.95" might mean "Very good quality", but more likely "they're crap, but what do you expect for $89.95, sucker?".

At your height and weight, you do need something better than the 30+ year old OEM pogo-sticks that were awful when new and what damping oil hasn't leaked out will be just rusty sludge now. Unfortunately the answer isn't cheap, quality costs money. Hagon make a good shock, they're reasonably priced at around $200.00 US, or if you want top quality with adjustable damping and optional spring rates, go the Ikons (Australian for Koni:-) for about double that again.

Here's a link to the Hagon site, you'll notice that they quote a different part number for each bike, and surprisingly, not "One size fits all" like the Emgo imports:

on that one size fits all... tried my marzocchi shocks i got... supposedly for the cb350 and up.... well i am 6' and 80kg... and they got spring bind on the highest preload setting.... so yeah buy shocks for the bike... not one that does them all.... anyone need a set of alloy bodies marzocchi's for a cb350/500/550???  peace

Wow!!!  I guess that answers that!   :o   Thanks for the honest replies.  That is why I posted, I knew I would get only the hard truth!  I think I'll look into those Hagons in a month or two.

There is only one problem with Hagons. When you use a "C" spanner to adjust the preload the tendency is to hold the spanner to the shock with your "free" hand DONT DO IT!!! You have three adjustment positions and when you reach the top the unseen cam will go over the last "hump" and come right back down to the bottom setting-----TRAPPING A SIZEABLE LUMP OF PALM FLESH IN THE PROCESS!!!!!! You are then "attached" permanently to the bike untill somebody comes along to remove the shock and transport you to a vice where THEY can compress the spring to dissasemble the shock and get your hand out. THIS HURTS!!! and leaves a permanent "fish eye" scar. Pictures can be posted if you insist

Excellent advice.  My hands thank you.  This applies to my bandit also.  And no, I believe you when you say it hurts, I really don't want the picture  ;)

JUST get them!!!!! No one here knows ANYTHING about shocks!! They all like to bounce around on the road!!! ;D
Get the hagons, for the money, they are good shocks. NEVER use your hand when adjusting any shocks.

yeah not real happy, but a guy here in albury is racing a cb350, and reckons the shocks will be ideal, he is going to get better springs... IKON shocks are bases here in town so will pass them onto him, and just keep surching ebay..:P

G'Day Ben, I've got a NOS pair of S&W "Street Strokers" (see pics) on my F2, that have done maybe 100 Kms since I put them on. I'll be selling the F2 this summer, so am returning it to standard trim.

They'll raise the back of your bike a tad and quicken up it's steering, but I'm gonna sell the bike so will put some standard shocks back on it.

I paid a thieving French/Canadian $150.00 US for them, (the shocks were fine but he ripped me off with shipping) so I'd be happy if I got that back? Cheers, Terry.

Hi.I fitted a pair of these to the Black Pig in a hurry about a year ago, and yes, began to weep a bit but then stabilised for some reason and are ok. Are a bit soft, I found that I had to whack them up to the third setting out of four for a single rider,but in turn the reduced bouncing DOES mean less wear! lol lol And the important thing is - look at this logically; as the years go by, the types and numbers of shocks and other stuff available for fours is dropping off fast, especially when it comes to getting stuff "off the shelf" or out of a catalogue, so at $90 even if they last ONLY a year or so for a relatively good mileage, you can afford to treat them as a consumable and replace again! Too many people think that suspension components should last the lifetime of the bike....this is not so, they move and boy do they wear, so they're a consumable just like sprockets chains pads shoes tyres and pipes.

Depends on what you buy mate, the only things in a quality shock that "wear" are the seals, so a set of 7610 series  Koni/Ikons that you pay 400 bucks for will normally benefit from a rebuild every 10 years, parts ARE available for them, and even though the initial purchase price may well eclipse the purchase price of the bike, they really DO last forever!

It all depends how cashed up you are when the need arises. I'm perpetually poor, so I find a set on ebay and just buy a 25 buck seal kit, if they're leaking when I buy 'em, I can normally get 'em for under 90 bucks, seal kit included! Just like that forgotten "Captain and Tenielle" song from the 1970's (I'm still in love with Tenielle, ha ha!) said, "Ya gotta shop around"! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I've had good results with the Progressive shocks in the 12 and 14 series.

The 14 is more of a racing shock and woudn't work with the stock chain guard, I just cut a slot in it with my die grinder and now they work great. Really love the ride both solo and two up.

The only thing I didnt like was the stupid plastic spring covers. What a cheap POS. So I consigned them to the round file and stole a set of chrome covers off an Yamaha parts bike. Looks like they were make for the shocks ;D
