Tank Question
« on: September 24, 2007, 03:28:26 PM »
I'm looking at buying this '76 CB550.  Here's are a couple of pictures.  My question is, did the '76 CB550 have that tank? Or is this a tank off of a '77?  The pipes look like a '76, the VIN and Engine code match the range for a '76.  I just wanted to figure out if it was original or not.  The guy selling it said it was on it when he bought the bike a couple of years ago.  I'm not worried either way, the thing's in good shape.  However, it'd be nice to know.  Thanks! -xodeuce

That isn't a 76 tank.

That looks like a tank and seat from a '75 or '76 550F with the K sidecovers painted to match.  Could you post the VIN?

Is this an American Bike?

The seat and tank both look like F model parts.  Small turn sigs like the US last had in 74.  If it's european, it could have any bits that Honda had in stock.  Or, they could have been swapped.  The F model year began in 75 in the US.  So, those parts were in Honda inventory.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't green clocks also "F"??
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

They look exactly like the clocks on my '76 550K.

I do know that the seat was new a couple of years ago.  So it's not original.  Also, it was repainted when it got the new seat, so it may have gotten new side covers and tank.  I'm not sure.    The Engine Code is CB550E-1080018 and the VIN starts with CB550-12423** (I've got the whole thing, just not so sure about posting it online.)

Correct side covers, but it has the older turn signals and that's an F tank on it...

Rockin.  That's what I thought. I just wasn't 100% certain.  Nice to know though, if I want to do a restoration those are the things I'll need to "correct."  On the other hand I may turn it into a cafe racer and make it all raucous and stuff ;)

FYI: F-tanks & K-tanks are different lengths, meaning the seat will be a different length too.
