about to hang it up for the season
« on: September 24, 2007, 04:13:37 PM »
I just can't seem to win...my  winter/spring rebuild took three times for me to get it right; first time starting after winter rebuild, clutch springs weren't properly installed. teardown. Rebuild #2 then, I was blowing oil from my pipes. rebuild #3 to put middle scraper rings in rightside up.

now, with a 605 cycle exchange overbore kit installed, she was running fine with the exception of profuse smoking at stops and hard acceleration (thread here suggested poor valve seating), and I even brought it with me to ride after I moved from Mass to Maryland...I've only run Rotella 5W synthetic in the engine since I have rebuilt it. currently I still have smoking issues, which I was willing to suffer with until I tear her down for the winter...now, after adding a container of fuel treatment to my tank, I have developed a decrease in engine power ( engine sounds different, like a cylinder might be missing) and a slight backfire at acceleration and slowdown. worst of all, after only ten miles or so of riding in the city, she gives off lots of heat. I changed the plugs this weekend, finding them brown to dark brown, with the #4 plug heavily fouled with oil and crud but the gap still intact. at a light this afternoon while in neutral, the bike wanted to quit-from overheating. I'm running an oil cooler and have long since attempted to push the engine at all.

I'm hoping to have an overhaul done on the engine this winter, adding a mild cam and another sleeve honing and new rings to the oversized pistons, and other things that have only 2k on them since original install.

to recap:

ran but smoked at lights and on acceleration after partial rebuild.
good speed and acceleration; 100+ on highway no problem,
now I have consistent overheating problems to go with all the smoke...

 ???
I'd rather shutdown for the season than do more harm to this engine, unless someone has a more expedient way to get her running better.

many thanks,

hym

Next time after rebuild:

For break in, run without oil cooler. Break in with 10/40 dino oil (my opinion).

I doubt you are overheating. I know that the oil tank on my 750 gets too hot to really hold my hand to.
Perfectly fine.

You have dark brown plugs and an oil fouled plug. I'm betting #4 ring did not seat properly. Carboned up plugs and an oil fouled plug will for sure want to die when going from a stop.
No.

Replace the fuel in the tank with uncontaminated.

I don't mean to start some big debate but I agree with mlinder don't use synthetic oil to break in an engine. Talking from experience!

My 550 is doing the same thing. I have the 555 cc kit from ebay
installed. I'm goin back to stock bore, and O.E. Honda pistons and
rings. What you describe is very nearly the same as how my bike acts, and my plug conditions are exactly the same as yours. Only
difference is mine isn't overheating. Hope you get things sorted
out.

I'm hoping to get Mike in boston to replace the rings, valves, springs and guides, and install a mild cam in this engine this winter, and to re-hone the new sleeves and polish intake and exhaust ports.
