A couple of weeks ago I picked up a 77 750 F2 and I finally had a chance to take it on a decent ride last weekend (about 50 miles). Based on that ride I have a few questions and I am seeking some suggestions on how I should approach addressing the issues I identified. Here are my findings:
- 1. After running for about 15 minutes the idle speed gets to and stays at 2,000 RPM
- 2. After the engine warms up it pings under load
- 3. When the bike is cold it sputters through the carbs quite a bit, however, once it's warm the sputtering stops.
- 4. The rear brake works well, however is there a way to adjust the travel of the brake pedal. I have to press the pedal too much before the brake starts to engage - Is this something I just have to live with on this bike?
- 5. The bike has an VIN of CB750F 2107830 the engine number is CB750E 2607851. The question I have is - Based on the model guide the engine should have number that begins with CB750FE 26..... Does this bike have a K engine instead of the higher power F engine? The engine is black like it should be for an F and the identification number is in the numerical range for an F, but because it's lacking the "FE" designation does it mean that this is a K motor?
- 5. The bike has (21,000 miles) a Kerker 4 into 1 exhaust, pods, and non-stock coils. Other than the pinging under load and the very high idle when it's warm, the bike runs great.
Here is my plan to sort out the issues with the bike:
- Full tune up
Oil Change
Valve Adjustment
Cam Chain Adjustment
Balance Carbs
Replace plugs
Check and or replace points
Check and adjust timing
Adjust idle
Lubricate cables
I don't know if any of those things will address the two main issues of high idle and pinging under load. Other than premium fuel to address the pinging, is there anything else I should try to address the issues with this bike?
