These pistons have no arrows showing which side goes forward. How does one tell what the proper orientation is? Does the ART stamp go forward, or to the rear?

The key are the recesses for the valves. If memory serves me, intake valve is bigger than exhaust valve. Just install them in such a way that the bigger recess confront the bigger valve, and vice versa.

Another way of telling is the pin offset. It's difficult to see just looking at the side of the piston but the hole in the side of the piston that you push the little end pin through is off set to the rear of the piston by a few mm.
If you look inside the piston it is more obvious.
