Missing carb piece?
« on: September 28, 2007, 06:14:55 AM »
I rebuilt my carbs a month ago, cleaned em out, and bench sync'y them.  Now I don't have the thing in front of me now, but I'll do my best to describe what I'm talking about.  On the 1 and 4 carbs, right where the long piece of metal that holds the butterfly choke valves meet the ends of the carbs.  One side of the piece is touching the sealed metal side of the carb.  On the other side there is just a hole;  Like if it was any longer it would protrude out of the carburetor.  Oh and just to clarify, these are my stock carbs from my 1977 cb750k.

Before I cleaned the carbs, there was this cork like substance blocking it up, but the carb cleaner made short work of that.  I figure there had to be something there before sealing up the carburetor but I don't know.  Is there anything I can use to seal it easily?  I want to sync my carbs tonight and I figure it will be impossible with this extra air flowing into one of the carbs.

Also, if no one has any idea what I'm talking about, I'll post pics tonight when i get home.

Ok, now these are now my carbs, but the pics I pulled from a post by mozingod.  Should give you an idea what I'm talking about.  One side is just like that, the other looks just like that but there is a hole inside the little protruding part instead.

Don't know much about those carbs but a dumb question comes to mind, have you mixed up the carbs when you reasembled them ? and one of the other carbs has a sealed port.

I couldn't have done that, otherwise the choke assemble wouldn't fit through at all.  There is only one sealed port on the opposite end.

It's almost like the previous owner took a number 2 or 3 carburetor from a separate set of carbs and stuck it on the end of this set.

I would check the carb numbers, there should be a 1 2 3 4  cast on one side near each carb's mounting flange (where it mounts to the link plate) with one number ground off - that's the original carb position.

That seal can pop out easily.  I lost one at my office workbench, and didn't find it for a couple of months.  Ran OK without, but I put it back when I found it.  If you can find an old time carb shop for autos, they might have something that will work laying around.
