Hey Gents,

I thought this might be of interest...
TinTin compiled a list of all the bolts & the sizes off the cb550f, so that you can just take the list to Brafasco and get stainless steel socket cap bolts instead.

I posted up the list as an attachment here. Its a .doc file you can download

I also found that many of the bolts listed could be used on the cb750.

yeah, the prices may vary depending on where you go but for all the bolts across the bike and now all you need are 2-3 allen keys, its not bad at all..

I already have most of the bolts on my bike changed to stainless allen head bolts but I cannot find the M10x1.25mm bolts anywhere (lower triple tree, lower shock mount, engine mounts, etc.) - any suggestions of where I can get them without having to order 100 of each length or something?  lol

Is an allen head bolt more likely to strip? I'm thinking that it has less surface area to push on...

Also, when you go to Brofasco do you hand them a list and they spend a half hour finding it all, or do you get them all yourself? I've never been in one.

  This guy puts together a nice engine kit and does all the work for you. Have used a couple on 750 engines and the bolts were bagged separately for each cover. The kit above is hard to beat since it is polished as well. Allen's fasteners is where I get all mine. Though now I have become a fan of titanium and Allen's doesn't have those.

Less likely to strip than a phillips (or old jis oem hdw)

Unless someone does a noob move and uses the wrong size wrench AND doesn’t seat it 100%

The kits ekpent mentioned come with washers. I also find it better to use an allen socket that will fit in my 1/4" drive handled extension so as not to over torque the fasteners, which is easy to do with a t-handle or ratchet.

I used a couple of alloyboltz kits on the 550 I'm working on now.  It is complete and a good buy.  I priced the bolts individually and saved about 30% vs buying stainless at a local hardware store.  The only issue I ran into is the head cover hex bolts will contact the tappet covers on cylinders 1 and 4.  I swapped those for socket caps.

And while zinc plated fasteners aren't exactly the prettiest, they are preferable because zinc + aluminum don't react. Am I mistaken? Is this a concern? I agree that SS socket caps look the very best.

You are mistaken to an extent. All dissimilar metals suffer galvanic corrosion, but some corrode at different rates. Zinc will corrode next to aluminum, and itself rust if the plating suffers. Stainless is highly resistant to corrosion itself, but you should use some type of thread lubricant because its much harder than aluminum and it will help repel the galvanic corrosion.

Depends on the operator
With a allen you hardly have to apply any downward force compared to a jis. Where you get into trouble is when go to tighten with a allen you can strip the threads a lot easier that's why I suggested a palm ratchet. You can use a 1/4in regular ratchet and just choke up on the handle. With a jis if you use a philips driver the opposite happens you strip the head because it just doesn't fit so it cams out. Hope this helps.
