2007 DUCATI MONSTER S2R1K PROGRESS/PICS/MODS/ETC...
« on: September 28, 2007, 07:28:27 AM »
Their has been allot of intrest/emails urging me to start a thread on my new Monster "project", so here we go...

The bike is a 2007 Ducati Monster S2R 1000 that was bought brand new (with 3 miles on the clock)..I was going to go with a red framed bike, but you cant go wrong with a black monster (thus my choice). I wasnt diggin the white stripe, but I have grown to deal with it for the time being. I really wanted a "dark" Monster (flat black) but they dont sell those anymore off the showroom floor..
Here's how the bike looked the day I brought it home --->

The 2nd day I had the bike I chopped down the license plate bracket. The stock setup of plastic plates and reflectors had to go in a bad bad way.. I basically just took a old piece of metal I had in the garage and made a bracket to hold the plate (worked out well)...

After I finished that I started looking over the bike to see what else I could remove, so off went the chain guard (2 show off that pretty swingarm), all the "warning" stickers were removed, and I painted the two exhaust heat shields black with my famous Dupli-color low gloss engine enamel spraypaint --->

Fast forward a couple of weeks and the bike was starting to look alittle better.
I "chopped" the rear fender off the bike to get it looking alittle tighter/lighter..
Also ditched the stock mirrors and ran with one CRG blindsite (on the left side)..
The stock Windshield/fairing was also removed..

This chop was kinda scarry becasue you actually have to cut off about 5'' of frame. For some reason Ducati thought it would be a smart idea to run the frame under the stock/plastic fender. So when that comes off you need to remove the frame..So it took alittle bit of ballz to cut my brand new bike, but the finished look is SO much better than that stock fender being on their, plus it made the bike look allot "tighter"...Also got a open clutch cover from a guy I know for $20 while I waited for the one I ordered from Ducati --->

Along with the tail chop I also ditched the stock turn signals (rear) and installed a Intergrated LED tail light that functions as Stop/Running/& Turn. So it was a kill three birds with one stone kinda thing. This really cleaned up the tail of the bike (less is more) --->

In my never ending quest to make this bike sound like a beast I removed the stock mufflers and am running an open Cat. I had a super overpriced exhaust system on order but decided I could spend that cash in many better ways.Plus It opened up the rear wheel which looks killer...

It isnt the loudest bike in the world, but It def. is louder than it was. It has a very big block chevy sound to it, especially on Decel @ tollway speeds.. ;D Below are two videos I took of the bike. One is mainly of the open dry clutch, and the other is me revvin the bike --->
http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q49/ProTeal55/?action=view&current=CLUTCH.flv
http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q49/ProTeal55/?action=view&current=OPENEXHAUST.flv
I also ditched the stock/big/nasty/huge/corny front turn signals in favour of some nifty little led units -->

These things are badass becasue they are super bright, plus they have the same number of LED's on the back of the signal (as well as the front). So when they blink they fire both front and back for added visability..
<a href="http://www.motowheels.com/italian/images/lg107048664.gif" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.motowheels.com/italian/images/lg107048664.gif</a> I got them from a company called Motowheels (google it)..

Here's the latest pic of the scoot as it stands --->

I still have clip-on's and a smooth top triple tree that need to find their way onto the bike, as well as the bike needing to be lowered in a bad way. Not that I cant flat foot the ground when I am on it, but this bike needs about 2'' taken out of it's height to get it looking the way I want. Winter plans are to ceramic coat the exhaust black to kinda make it "blend" into the bike alittle more, and figure out some sorta tips for the cat. Also want to have the fornt forks anodized black, as well as the triple trees and whatever else I can pull off the bike. The swingarm needs to get powdercoated as well (basically wanna black out the entire bike as much as possible, with random brushed accents)..

More updates to come as they happen, stay tuned... ;D

Hey Joe, Are you going to put some turn outs or something off of that Cat? I think that would look cooler that just the stock cat plain.

FYI - a word of advise from one Duc owner to another - That swing arm does look killer, but brush up on your cleaning skills if you ride it much. Mine likes to throw the chain lube all around.

Sponsor ?
Whats a sponsor ?
I work for a living, am single, and have no kids  ;D
I bought this bike with the full intention of "cutting it up" to make it my own. As anyone who knows me is fully aware that I cant leave ANYTHING alone for too long of a time...

Some sorta tips/turn-outs are def. in the bikes future. I just need to get some pipes and play around with it for awhile to see what I like. Right now it's fine, but I agree it does look alittle "unfinished". All in due time..

As far as the chain goes, I have been pretty lucky that mine doesnt spit lube all over the place. I do know what you mean about the swingarm getting dirty pretty quick. Eventually I plan to have it removed and powdercoated black (to match the frame), but that is a l o n g term project.. Much more that needs to get done on the bike before then...

Today I am gonna remove the exhaust and spray it black, and my buddy Danny is coming over and we are finally gonna get those nasty ass bars off the bike and install my smooth top triple tree and clip-on's that have been sitting in my room for the past month.

More pics to come !

Some pics of the bikes progress:
1. Installed new Clip-ons (with 1.5'' rise) today.
I first had to remove the old bars and all the crap on them -->
Here's a pic of the madness which is Joe tearing into a 2007 Ducati with less then 3K miles on it  ;D -->
I am going to mount the clip-on's above the top tree so I needed to push down just over 1'' of the tubes thru the top tree --->
I was going to install a smooth top tree that I had bought off Ebay but I came to realize that it wouldnt work becasue the tree I bought was missing two holes I needed to mount my gauges >:(, so I will have to deal with the stock top triple untill I pick up another one that will work. I will post pics soon, but as I type this the clip-on's are on and look/feel/work great. I took the bike for alittle spin with them and it feels much tighter then it did with the bars, as well as makes the bike look lower. I now need to lower the rear 1'' to match (another day/another project)..

While I was out in the garage I also painted the stock chrome headlight trim ring black to match the headlight bucket and the rest of the bike. This was a HUGE improvement over the stock/chrome look. (pics to come tomorrow).

I also painted the exhaust black to help it blend into the rest of the bike. The exhaust systems on these bikes kinda just hang, so I figured painting it black was the best thing I could do now, untill I have my own custom deal-e-o bent/welded up over the winter.. I still need to get some tips of some sort to slap on the cat conv, but progress is being made...

I will take more pics of the bike tomorrow and add them to this post...
Stay tuned... ;D

Just an idea...why not throw a plaque or something over the center of the triple for now joe? or make a smooth cover that covers the area between the clipons.

I am gonna make something like that up tomorrow. A aftermarket smooth top triple for these bike's are in the $300 range, but it looks like thats gonna be my only option..I will pick one up over the winter, becasue the LAST thing I am doing is rip what I just finished all back apart again..

Here are some pics of todays progress.
The Clip-On's -->

The bike in my garage with the black exhaust, scuffed "Ducati" name on the motor (what other Monster has that ?!), Blacked out headlight trim ring, and other little tidbits I painted/scuffed/etc..

And me playing around with Black & White -->

As I said I will get some better pics in the sun tomorrow, time to go hit the bars... ;D

Two more pics of how the bike stands at the moment --->

With the new clip-on's installed it has a very "my old cb750" feel to it, with more power and better brakes  ;D

Most if not all of the black paint burned off the exhaust >:(, but I am gonna pull the system anyways and have it ceramic coated black for a more permant coating...

Glad you like  ;D
I was/am kinda bumed that the pait burned off the exhaust, but as I said I am gonna give it a pro-ceramic coat over the winter so it should be fine. I really want to rip the front-end off and anodize it black, but that seems like way too much work...

Proteal-

Wondering about the front turns signals from Motowheels that you installed . . .I have a pair of LEDs (autogem babybullets) on the rear that I really dig aesthetically but my riding buddy has informed me that they are invisible when riding in bright sunlight.  You say your new signals are powerful but can they really be seen on a bright day?  Thanks

Those Motorwheels signals can def. be seen in the daylight.
At night they are REALLY bright. I have buddies who I ride with who say that when I am in front of them and I hit the signals (with them firing front & rear) that their is no mistakin that I am turning. Not to say that it is gonna prevent someone from hitting me, but bright turn signals are better than none..

I am a huige fan of these signals, and plan to run them on all of my future projects (that run signals)..

Latest pic of the Monster (taken 10/31/07)
I got bored and painted the headlite ears black, which made a huge difference looks wise.
No real winter plans with this, as I have to go pickup my newly acquired CB450 project.

Joe,

The winter is the time to HOT up that monster's engine.  How about a small NOS kit?  It should be fast if it looks fast.

The bike def. "hits" alittle harder than it did before I lowered it, but I can live with it. I am guessing this will even out alittle once I lower the rear to match the front. I bought this bike as more of a project than something I am gonna take on the track, so suspension settings and all that crap really doesnt effect me.

My last long ride I was on (400 miles) was done with no real issues/pain/etc...
