"jumping" speedo
« on: October 18, 2007, 04:57:05 AM »
My speedo has been jumping all over the dial for a long time.

I was going to strip it but found a thread (can't find it now) about flushing the speedo with isopropyl alcohol.

IT WORKS - three flushes and I have a rock solid speedo needle.

Took the speedo off, turned upside down, poured about 15-20 ml (bought a 100ml bottle from a pharmacy) into the cable hole, held my finger over the hole & shook s**t out of the speedo.

Drained fluid & repeated twice more, put speedo back on & presto

Is there a requirement to replace whatever old lube is washed away?  It seems that just cleaning the old crud out and not re-lubing it is only doing half the job? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

G'day Tez, I'm not sure if the original post had anything on lubing but it makes sense.

There's a good post on the "salocal" site regarding speedo stripdown & lube so when I get time I'll do that but this fluishing is a definate quick fix for the jumps.

About 15 or 16 years ago, the speedo needle on my 750F started jumping and the speedo occasionally squealed, especially in cold weather.  I had an aerosol can of white lithium grease with a straw handy so I squirted grease into the small gap between the collar and the shaft the cable goes into.  That took care of it immediately and it has been fine all these years since.  I keep expecting to have to do it again sometime, but it is still doing OK.

Hmmnnn, that might be the go Offy, clean it out with alcohol first, then give it a squirt of white lithium grease, I'll give it a try! Cheers, Terry. ;D
