Art,

I second Gordon's suggestion and will add to it. As long as it sounds and feels right ride it but keep an eye out on those new Kerkers. Watch for any discoloration that will tell you if one or more cylinders are running lean.

Don't worry about filling up the oil before turning your crank. Just don't fire it up.

We're all just as anxious as you at this point.

Have one helluva ride!!

Nope.  I had a few problems today.  Minor problems, but enough to keep the engine cold for now.

First, I have been waiting weeks for two Earl's hose end fittings to arrive.  I called them yesterday evening and they said that they are out of stock until the 18th of this month.  I said BS on that, I'll look elsewhere.  So I made a few calls and found some Spectre clamps.  I picked them up today and saw that they just looked too large.  Turns out they are, they are for 5/8 hose, but with a 1" outer diam.  They look silly on the -AN 10 hose, so now I need to find new clamps ASAP.

Second, my petcock hits the CR carbs.  I cut down the tank rubbers and got it to fit, but I am going to have a helluva time hooking up my fuel line.

Third, I am unsure where I should set the timing for my Dyna 2000 ignition.  They recommend between 35-40 degrees for a stock compression engine, mine is above stock compression, so I need some input from Mike and Gordon.

I can't beleive two lousy hose clamps are holding me up.

Sparty, which carb boots are you using(70-76 or 77-78K). My petcock hit the carbs when I tried using 77-78 boots, but cleared fine using 70-76. I've got a different tank than you though(F2).

I'd set the Dyna in #4 curve with 35 degrees total advance to start. No more than 37.5, and no less than 32.5 I would think.

I don't know how you can control yourself...  I would have thrown on any old clamp I could get my hands on just to hear it roar!
So are Earl's hose end fittings like quick-disconnects? or are they just like the magna-clamps?
I found these online maybe somebody like this will ship overnight?  http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/SPT2268.htm
looking forward to seeing the finished project!

EDIT:
Here is what I used because they were close

Thanks Jev.  I have the Spectre clamps.  They are just too bulky and they don't fit the lower portion of the oil lines because they hit the clutch cover ring.  I need something thinner.  Most likely I will just buy some stainless steel clamps and put those on for now until I can get the Earl's fittings.  I want to take the bike over to bike night tomorrow.  I hate putting all of this time and money into the build and have to put on stupid looking clamps, but that is what I have to do for now I guess.

The problem is the '72 tank.  If I had a F tank it would work easy.

Thanks for that info. My next project is a 71-73 racer and looks I'll be up against the same fitting problem :P

Art..before I've gone anywhere I've gone for some 1 or 2 mile short trips to check everything out (especially the jetting). I wouldn't go to far at first brother just in case something needs adjustment etc. I'd start at 35 BTDC for timing too.

Art - you are welcome to call me. I can fix that tank problem - I promise. I had the same damn thing happen to mine. Check your PM. I will send my number via the messaging. I'll be digging up the CR jetting waiting on your call.

I missed this thread entirely. Good write up, Gordon. I really like the bracket you made for your remote idle, looks like part of the original set-up :)   Oh, and I probably would have saved myself a weeks worth of jet/needle changes had I seen this thread earlier ;) (but at least now I have tuning "experience") ;D
