I don't have anything to check it against, so I'm only guessing, but it sounds like it's the plug for the  ignition switch.

I bought one for my K4 and everything was exactly the same...for the most part...Some color codes were different.  It sounds like that plug is the one for the starter safety relay.  Just follow the schematic and follow the wires, as long as everything goes where it should (other plugs), you're golden.

More then likely.  Found this thread with a picture of the safety unit wiring:

Maybe to avoid the hassle, grab one off of ebay, or I can see if I have an extra one (I think I do actually...).

Ah ok, couldn't find one in my parts drawer, so that's probably your best bet, glad I could help.

Without that you should get everything ECEPT the starter motor,
If not you need to check out all the circuits.
If you want to fit the relay there should be a small switch operated by the clutch lever and two wires in the headlamp bucket for it

okay i got the lights and everything else problem figured out, the ground lug wasnt actually attached to any of the copper in the wire, just the green insulation. almost home now i think. have i mentioned yet i hate electrical problems and yet electricals was the only phase at AMI i got 100% in? oh yeah, when i hit the starter button the headlight goes out like it's supposed to so i know the button itself is ok, just nothing happening at the starter solenoid.

I was having issues on Saturday so don't feel bad...And I'm an Electrical Engineer...Wired up the cafe for the first time, knew the battery was toast and figured eh, I'll just leave the 2 amp charger hooked up to test.  Everything worked in the aftermarket swicth w/o the headlight hooked up...I even at power at the leads.  Signals were fine, relay actuated kill switch worked, just couldn't get the headlight to work if I plugged it in.  When I plugged it in, the kill switch stopped working.  I gave up, slept on it, looked at it the next day and noticed that the charger crowbarred when I hooked up the headlight...So, a new battery later, everything works great.

Like I said, don't feel bad.... ;D

ok i've spent the afternoon diagnosing this problem. the yellow/red wire is supposed to supply a ground when the starter button is pushed to complete the circuit to allow the solenoid to operate. i unplugges that wire from the main harness and with a ohmmeter on the wire from the pain harness i pushed the starter button, sure enough it went to ground. so i told myself the problem MUST be in the solenoid so i took the yellow/red wire that comes off the solenoid and grounded it. the starter operated. at this point i am now totally lost as to why, the starter button does complete a circuit but still will not operate the solenoid which i've also deemed good. and no, i cat just use the kick starter with bad knees.
