Memorable Moments: Something Your Mom or Dad Did or Said
« on: October 01, 2007, 12:38:33 PM »

I'll start off with an incident about my Mom.

When I was in the USAF stationed at Misawa AFB in Japan  from Dec 1967 til Dec 1969 is when it happened. Anytime one of us got a "Care Package" from home, the others would gather round to see what kind of "Homemade" edibles were sent. This time was no different, I got a package. As I opened it, everyone was straining to see what I had gotten. There were 2 coffee cans that were filled with chocolate & peanut butter fudge. Only thing was, the fudge didn't harden like it was supposed to. Instead, there were 2 large lumps of fudge. The rest of the guys thought there was something wrong with it and left. What they didn't know was that it was just as good and my Mom knew I didn't care and would eat it just as well anyway. Of course I never told the others that and it left it all for me. In 2 years time, I got several of those packages. ;D

                                Later on, Bill :) ;)

I've got one from my mom:

I was 11, and my step-brother was 12.  He was much bigger than I.  One day we had a fight with wet socks.  Stupid kid kind of fun.  We wet the big old tube socks in a puddle and ran after eachother with them.  After a few minutes of this it got more intense as you can imagine and I ended up getting him real good across the face.  It sat him right down.

He then picked up a fist sized rock and said "I'm gonna pound your head in." So I ran like hell into the woods and returned later when my mom got home.  When I walked in the door she yelled at me and wacked me really hard in the back of the head a couple times with this huge hairbrush she had in her hand.

She was yelling "You never run from a fight."

The whole thing was crazy.  I still can't really make sense of it.  I did learn my lesson though and never ran from a fight after that.  I just finished them.

You can't make too much popcorn, but you can definately eat too much popcorn.

When I was 6 or 7 I remember my father taking me to the Luke, the 'BMW Doctor' as we called him. We went there every 2 weeks on sundays.
It was an old guy that had a few garages full old and new BMW's. My dad had one too, and they would just stand there, open the hood and look at the engine. I don't remember them ever wrenching, they just watched and a talked about cars for a few hours a week.
Every time I see a BMW model that the doctor had in his garage, I remember these wonderfull sunday's at the garage. If I ever buy a car, it will have to be a 02 series BMW.

the story my mom told me about how i used to call her "mother mother mother" over and over and over again. one day she apparently had enough and said "you know, mother is only half a word" not htinking that i would ask what the other half was. her and dad used to laugh about that one.

Mom;  "Stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about."

Dad;  "Don't ever smoke, and never get on a motorcycle."

I just told my wife about this one the other day:

When I would come home late at night as a teenager, my mother would stop me by the kitchen door and take a good wiff of my hair.  She was checking for tobacco, and more importantly, pot smoke smell.  What I never realized is she was also triaging to deal with me before my dad would find out (he went to bed early, and got up very early).  She knew how he would blow his stack, and she was all for discipline but didn't want an angry father and unruly teenager going at it.  Smart lady.  I should thank her.

Dad:  Always sided with my wife (so does mom since dad died six years ago), and told me to treat her like a queen.  He always gave my wife the greatest respect and generosity.

Mom:  "You made your bed, now you have to lie in it."  "Don't ever get on a motorcycle again."

Dad:  "Blood is thicker than water."  And he always stuck by me and bailed me out of a jam, even when it meant I would get beating or some such later on.

Dad:  When I was quite little, we were in the driveway washing the car (well, Dad was).  I was trying to help with waxing.  Dad told me "put some elbow grease into it."  A few minutes later he asks "what are you doing" to me rubbing my little elbow vigorously on the hood.  "I'm putting elbow grease on the car."  He got a good laugh out of that.

Mom:  (She'll kill me for this)  She was an English teacher.  She once corrected one of my letters home from college!

Both folks (both schoolteachers) regularly but kindly corrected me when I used poor English.  Imma (Mom) still does...

My Dad:
While I was doing some 1/2 assed job on something as a kid....
:Why is Derek that it you never seem to have enough time to do it right the 1st time, but you always seem to find the time to do it right again later?

That sentence was spoken in a very low tone, but still echoes today ;D

P.S. He always made me straighten out nails when we took something apart so we could use them again for another project :o

My mom and dad would say to me, "Some day, we will come to your house and jump on the furniture, leave toys on the stairs, blast our music, and fart and burp all the time."  My response, "Naw, that won't happen, I am never leaving home."  They turned pale....  I was a wise ass then also.

First I'd like to say that this is really bringing out some great stories from you all. Thank you for those who have participated and those who will. ;)

One weekend (a Sunday morning, actually) we were at the place on the lake (where my Dad lives now) and Mom decided that we (my She, my Dad, my brother and I) should got to this small cafe nearby, for a nice Quiet Peaceful breakfast. Now, I was about 14 (or so) at the time and music (50's & 60's Rock & Roll) was my thing then. I couldn't seem to pass up a jukebox without playing a few tunes. Again, it was a nice QUIET PEACEFUL morning. And, as we entered the little cafe, I asked my Mom if I could play something on the jukebox. She stopped, turned, looked at me and said,"It better not be loud!" Of course I assured her that it wouldn't be. ::) I went over to that jukebox and searched and searched for something suitable to my Mom's request. Then I saw it. ;D How many of you have ever heard a song called "Rythum Of The Falling Rain? For those who haven't heard it, Picture the type of morning that I have described and imagine (if you will, the sun is shining) all of a sudden, there was a clap of thunder and the sound of rain coming from the jukebox (before the actual singing) and picture the look I got from my Mom. She never said a word and I never asked to play a song on an outing like that again. Funny, that song never seemed THAT loud to me before "That Particular Morning". ::) ;D

I remember my dad giving me his version of "the talk."  He took me into his bedroom, and showed me a drawer with a box of condoms in it.  He said "There is a box of condoms in here, and nobody ever counts them or would know if a few were missing, and I want to make sure you know they are here and available.  There's just one thing I want you to always keep in mind............. You are living proof that they don't always work!"  (There was 12 years between me and my next oldest brother. :o)

I think our dad's would have gotten along famously!

When ever I would get in trouble, dad would say, "Go thank your mother.........I wanted to leave you at the hospital, but she made me bring you home."

Whenever I would cry about getting hurt, "Suck it up, quite your crying and rub some dirt on it you little sissy."  The tears would stop almost immediately.

I remember when the first video game systems started coming out (Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, etc) and I remember complaining to my mother about not having one and how cool it would be if we would and if we had games x, y, and z.  My mother, not one for saying more than she needed too at times, looked at me and deadpanned:

"We don't always have what we want in this family, but we always have what we need."

I don't think I will ever forget that.  Funny thing is, that phrase rattles around my noggin frequently now as an adult, and I find myself living by it most of the time.

Aint that the truth!

Mom, "Did you eat today?  Then what do you have to complain about.  There are starving children in Africa......"  I'm sure most of you know the rest of that speech. ;)

"You little son of a #$%*! You're just like your father!" "You shouldn't call yourself names and thanks for the compliment" Circa 1962 when I refused to get my hair cut. I can tell you what car we were in and the exact location. Shortly after Dad left. It was then that I began to understand  8). RIP mom.

April 1974: Dad - "no way are you getting one of those big Honda's, not under my roof!"
May 1974: Dad - "get out"
June 1974: Dad - "can I have a ride?"

This one would be on my Dad:

One evening we were getting ready to go to my Junior High School for a Parent-Teachers thing and my little brother was driving us  nuts (especially my Dad) with questions like "Where are we going, where are we going?" over and over and finally my Dad turned to him and exclaimed, "We're going CRAZY!" With that, my brother said, "Can I go? Can I go? ::) Well, that kinda broke the tension of the hurrying to get ready and get out of there. ;D

This would be on both of them:

When I was getting prepared to go to Amarillo, TX for my Air Force Basic training, my Mom was all rattled and "going to with me" ::) My Dad's reaction was,"See you when you get back". It was always like that, he was so nonchalant and she was so protective.  Did I tell you that I was the oldest? Of course, They were super strict with me and totally relaxed by the time my brother came along nearly 10 years later (I wonder if that was from a condom failure?) ;D ::) ;D ::) ;D ::) ;D ::) ;D ::) ;D ::) ;D ::) I should be ashamed :-\
But I'm not! ;D ;)
