Which paint color will sell better?
« on: September 29, 2007, 06:06:50 AM »
I have an interesting question for you.  I have a stock K4 that I plan to sell in the spring.  I am going to paint it soon and am wondering which paint color will sell better.  My choices for this year are sunrise orange, boss maroon metallic, or freedom green metallic.  It is originally boss maroon metallic.  Do you think paint color would make a big difference in selling price?  I plan to put it on Ebay.

Thanks

Jake

Who can really say?  If some one is out there looking for one of these bikes and the price is right for them, do you think they will pass it up because it's the wrong color?  Personally the sunrise orange is my favorite color on the early bikes, but wouldn't pass on one that was green or maroon.
If it's a straight paint job and filler work I would say paint it the original color for simplicities sake, otherwise paint what ever color you like.

You could also list it just "primed" with the option to paint the buyers choice of color - within reason.

Nah, original colors, composed of paint that is of equal or better quality to factory paint and properly applied to the same standards as factory paint will always sell better than "primered" bikes.

Of the three colors, I like orange the best, followed by Boss Maroon with Green the last.

I have a 74 550 painted Sunrise Orange and a 75 550 in Freedom Green. No comparison. Go with the orange. Send an email to dondirtbiker and don't look back!

Flake Sunrise Orange all the way. I had a 550KO in that color and it's still my favorite.

The blue that came on the F models looks pretty good, imho. Orange would work.

Happy trails.

Here's a white one for Uncle Ernie.

edit - The gold that came on some earlier models might look ok as well. Looks pretty sharp on Raul's 350 twin.

All good responses from what I've read so far.  Here's my 2 cents.

So long as the prepwork beneath the paint is done impeccably and the topcoat and clearcoat are laid down smooth and wetsanded to perfection, any color you choose will be a winner.  Obviously everyone has their own color preferences (my preferences from the colors you've suggested are green, orange, maroon in that order) and that will affect to some degree whether or not the bike is worth looking at.  Some people avoid green like the plague, others love it; but like I said, if you've got quality prepwork and quality paint laid perfectly, some people will be open minded to a color they otherwise wouldn't have considered.

Prost!
