Rotor and Stator.....rebuild or buy brand new??
« on: October 02, 2007, 02:54:42 PM »
My rotor for my 1980 Honda cb650 is in need of a rebuild.  Could anyone suggest where a good place to get that done would be??  I am in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area.
Since I have bike all torn down I was thinking about replacing the stator or having it rebuilt so the charging system we be all updated.  Would anyone out there suggest one or the other?? (rebuild or by brand new) and why??

Thank you......

I would have it rebilt. I have a 81 750 I think has the same rotor and these have a lot of trouble.I talked with a man that rewinds them and he said he uses better meteral and sealer. The 81 only has 7000 Mi. on it. The guy told me that sometimes they will test good when the engine is not running but when RPM's go up it go open and not charge. Dannie

I would talk to Tim Parrott here:

http://www.tpe-usa.com/

He has been rebuilding them for 20 years.  I talked to him today and he seems very knowledgeable and willing to share information.  He rebuilds them better than when they were new.  [He uses better wire.]

I would not buy a used one unless you just like replacing them over and over again.  They were a problem when they were new so why replace them with a part known to go bad?

Just my 2 cents.

I have been told that a good rebuilder can update your stator windings for much higher output than you currently have. This would allow you to run a better headlight etc.
