gas cap seal
« on: October 01, 2007, 08:26:33 AM »
hey all, i have noticed the my 76 550 must be leaking gas from the rubber seal under the gascap. i filled the bike with gas before my ride to a friend house about 45 miles from home. no problems after returning home latter in the day i noticed what must be dried gas that has stained the tank. a few trickles down the right side. they were not there when i left my buddys place. i know the rubber seal under the cap is cracked  and brittle. do i have to replace with oem or can i make my own?  thanx carl

I can't imagine this is a real tight-tolerance part that would prevent you from making one yourself.  Just make sure whatever you use is gasoline-freindly (duh).  That being said, the parts fiche lists them for about $5.

thanks for the info, it cant be real tight as the bottom of the cap is spring loaded. called the honda dealer its only 7 buck, but of course they have to order it. i made one out of the rubber gasket material i used to make my discs for under the cylinder head.they held up great. it just requires a little more umph to close the gas cap, since i put the old one back in and put my homemade on top of it. will see if it works after my next ride.  carl

You might not want to put too much pressure on the cap latch so as not to break the little hook thing.

shouldn't be too bad as the original latch was replaced years ago with a locking one. besides even with the cap latched it feels spring loaded. it will still move a little up and down.

I am going through the same thing with my CB750KO and I am trying to solve that problem before I have the tank painted this winter. I put a new gasket on and it still leaks if I fill it.  The guy doing the paint said to put some silicone on the lip of the tank and that will seal up good everytime I close the cap.
