Topic: cb350- removing oil filter from engine

I'm trying to get the oil filter off the engine on my 68 cb350 engine. I bought the tool from Dennis Kirk- which I don't see how you could use as it just turns over and there is no possible way to get leverage. Also- as it states in the manual 'the tab' that needs to be bent back... I can't think of a conceivable way to get that bent back. I've bent the sh&t out of my flathead screwdriver, but no way it would bend that tab back. I'd need to be behind the tab for it to move. So, what I want to know (before I throw more sharp objects in my dining room) is how the hell is this done???

To flatten the lockwasher - you need not only a screwdriver but a small hammer, to put it back into place. I bought three or four new washer, and I plan to use only one of the tabs each time, so the same washer is good for four or five uses.

Regarding the way to loosen the nut, I hope my picture speaks for itself. Just make sure you don't exert force on the ends of the clutch basket tabs, but closer to the basket body. If you have a strap -like the ones used to tie bikes on trailers- you can use it also to keep it from spinning. I've used that on an alternator rotor and it worked, as I couldn't think of anything else to keep it from turning.

The tabs are just dead soft steel, I don't know why you are having trouble. They were bent in with what look like beefy needle nose pliers, just use a pin punch or equivalent to bang the bent tabs back down flatish.
Turning the nut just block as shown and use impacts to loosen it. I don't know what tool you have, the Honda one has a tee handle or you can get "sockets" from Snap-On and others.

I did finally get it off both engines. Bill gave me some keen advice on another site that made it MUCH easier to get it moving.

Raul, Steve (sprint66) gave me a really good tip so you wouldn't have to use that big bar. If you put a penny or a quarter where the gears meet it holds it there quiet nicely. You will destroy the quarter, but it works pretty good!

I tried with a rag first and it did block the gears, but not enough. The mere thought of putting some metal inside made me shiver, but I really didn't think in soft metal like copper or aluminium. Thanks for the tip.

I think the factory tool is the same for this nut and 750 clutch nut.. wobder if the nut is the same part #.

I have both a 750 and a 350. Checked both parts manual and the nut part number is the same (90231-200-010), hence the tool is the same for both.

Good for me as I already bought the tool for the CB350... ;-)

Same here, back in the 70,s..didnt want to pay the dealer to clean the filter.

 I am thinking the factory tool may work better as you may get it off by striking the T handle w/o jamming the gears..

What I have is a tool I bought off ebay, with the four prongs and a 3/4 square hole so it can be used with a ratchet wrench and an extension arm.
