rust in rear rim
« on: July 17, 2005, 08:43:08 PM »
Evening,

I've got my front tire replaced ;D. when i took off the rear, I discovered sections where the bead of the tire had rusted onto the rim. after removing these deposits, what's the best thing to put on the rim before mounting a new tire. Naval jelly? Rust inhibitor? any suggetions would help.

Clean off all loose rust and paint with rust inhibitor. Be sure it's dry before you mount the tyre or it will stick real hard.

Hi, i usually go not for an inhibitor but a rust converter that oxides the rust and you can both remove it and just paint over the deep pitting. I use an ordinary matt black household gunk for this. And if the unchromed part is deep in the well, instead of a rim tape - which CAN also trap more moisture, I try to apply a layer of GOOD sticky duct tape. Ever noticed guys how all duct tape is NOT created equal??? :-P
