Different bikes have different petcocks.  My '77 550k has a threaded nipple hanging below the tank, so the petcock goes on and off as easily as a garden hose.  Other petcocks have a flat flange that is secured with two bolts/screws.  Also fairly easy.

About the hardest thing you may have to deal with is replacing any gaskets should they need it.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

should just unscrew. Put a crescent wrench on it to break it free and then you should be take it off by hand. Don't bodge the threads reinstalling it or your tank is junk.
