Get in our SOHC BEFORE AND AFTER 2008 calendar!
« on: October 05, 2007, 01:03:18 AM »
Last year Sparty made a calendar of various members bikes and somehow mine got in it.  It has been cool having a calendar that isnt full of puppies unicorns and lambhorginis, but instead lots of pretty SOHC4s and- somehow- my bike. October is 'my  month' and when i turned the page and saw the picture of my bike i was moved to clean it the fawk up, and offer to print and ship this years effort.

I will go ahead and start a submission thread but i would like to hear from Heffay that this calendar will not be in competition with a BOTM calendar- although this will be another limited run sent only to the chosen 12 - i am also open to a possible collaborative effort to maximize benefit to this site and the members.

I accepted the responsibility of being judge jury and selectacutioner of this years calendar but will enlist the help of sparty, or start a vote if things get overwhelming or i just dont want to be the one you blame for not getting a calendar.

My first decision as Selector will be that sparty's idea of before and after shots kicks as$ and that he is strongly encouraged to submit your bike as it is because of you that this calendar got started, that i am moved to do this years, and you have too great an example  of what the possiblities of
before
and after
can be.  nobody got to look at january long enough to be sick of that bike.

i will need high res pics if possible from submitors, res will have an effect on selectability, but 'most improved' will definately be the primary criteria.

so go ahead and submit
...AND GET IN OUR SOHC 2008 CALENDAR! (the 2008 sparty's printer memorial calendar)

Sorry Teal...no DOHC's or Duc's... :D

this is a tough call.  most improved for sure teal, and while sohc it is not, it does belong to a member of the sohc4 owners club, making it marginally fair game.  i just dont want to open the door to all manner of bike, or car for that matter.  so for now- if i only get 11 sohc submissions and your dohc, it would be an easy sin to commit, but keeping it all sohc4 should be the goal now.

And we send the pics to.............?
Host on photobucket or similar and post the img address like teal did (to see how that is done you can quote the first post or teals post to see how its done HTMLwize and replace the url of the pics with your own img addresses of the hosted before and afters.)  this way if a vote is necessary all pics will be up and it also allows me to download the file at whatever size you upload it to photobucket.

Very nice, although I think the "before" pic is actually my diecast 1970 model K0 that I bought from Andy, (the one in my avatar) and not actually Andy's gold sandcast before the rebuild. Cheers, Terry. :)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

its a little early for allegations and scandals, but i suppose no calendar would be complete without.  I implicitly trust anyone with several beautifully restored K0s, so it never occurred to me that Andy would be trying to pass off bogus before shots just to gain entry into our illustrious calendar.  i suppose the 'power of the calendar' is that great, but would still like to get to the bottom of these allegations before anyones hard earned reputation is forever sullied- Terry excepted of course because his reputation is unsullyable- how do you sully what is already suspect?

so i suppose i need to lay down the law and say anyone caught doctoring photos or passing off one of terry's bikes as their before photo will be talked about in the shameless post boost thread until they die of embarrassment.

and Terry, submit an actual high res after-pic of said bike in question, or i will be forced to go to war with the intelligence i got

no need to ask for gentility- your rebuild shows attention to detail, enhancements toward modernization and roadworthiness, as well as a healthy disdain for caseguards.

at this point i have less than a years worth of candidates and must encourage ANYONE who has signifigantly changed the appearance or function of what their PO dropped on them to submit.  consider it your civic duty.

Here's my before photo with 25 years of dust. I have some more around somewhere but only after some cleaning.

I'll take some new "after" pics this weekend, but since it's stock, it always looks the same.

returning a bike to shiney stockness after sitting is as much of an after as modding the fark out of a perfectly good bike.  improvement is very subjective.  so let me clarify:  i will do my best to pick the pics of bikes that exhibit a good deal of effort on the part of the owner.  thus illustrating how some (most if not all) of us devote many of the days in our calendar year to caring for these bikes and bringing them back, as well as making them our own.  I just ride the hell out of mine and try and keep it presentable, and neglected to take pics when i got it, with a missing side cover and plenty o' pitting and a bent swing arm rod.  so i am out of this calendar, but you know what i am talking about- we all put our hearts and souls into these bikes and i think it is a worthwhile effort to compile digital images in the form of a calendar that show this process of transformation through soul-pouring.

that said i have to give preference to those not already featured in an SOHC CALENDAR, but like the man says, until there are 12 everyone's a winner  ;)

I agree. Let's see some new entries. I only offered mine in case you don't get enough, but I'm sure your have no problem filling several calenders and you'll have a tough time picking only 12.

Great idea, KK.

I personally suspect Terry, that the bike is the same in both pics, but your K0 ended up with it's original pipes ;)

first of all i appreciate all the interest and 'good idea, kk' stuff, but this is sparty's idea and, as one of the grateful chosen of last years calendar, i am just trying to continue the tradition.  hopefully someone i choose for this one will do one next year.

the format last year was if you are chosen, you get a calendar, free.  no sales to other members- as someone who didnt think he would be selected for the calendar i know i was bummed, but i really have no desire to profit from this venture- just pay back and pay foward what sparty started.  so i was torn as to whether to exclude those who can't submit photos or dont get selected.  Heffay to th e rescue!  he is doing a bike of the month calendar that he expects to be available for christmas.  this calendar will be available to all and the sales will benefit the forum- and i do not want to compete with his calendar.  I would be happy to send him the proofs for each page and let him mass produce the 2008 getin my sohc calendar for sale here, but havent talked to him about it so cant say if that will happen.

lastly, i dont care if the calendar is all 750s so long as only a few are restored stockers, and the rest are all different enough to be interesting- the quest for variety that i think was sparty's reason for trying to get all types of sohc submissions is moot here.  the most important criteria for me are the following

a) how different after is from before
b) how good the picture is (both composition and resolution-wise)- although this is more important of the after picture as i see the format being big after pictures and smaller before pictures.
c) first come first serve- i would like to get this out in november or december so might have to go to calendar with the pics i've got at some point.  so submit early and submit often.
d) how nice you have been to me on the forum

just kidding about d)

so please keep submitting regardless of CCs or style of finished product- if i get too many of anything i will decide based on resolution (usability) and who got there first, or if i cant decide, start a vote thread and let the forum decide for me.

wow i need an editor  ::)

Andy's before shot is not bogus.

My Brazilian friend and I found that sandcast in a garage in Massachusetts. Had not hit the road since 1981 in Rhode island. It was not running summer 2005.He asked me to store the sandcast in my garage.

That classic before artwork photo is my fault; I added the K2 tank, crappy HM300s and leftover cracked gold right sidecover. It had a K2-6 seat and I put the K1 on it so it was a possible re-build. In addition, the K5 carbs helped fire it up. The result of my patchquilt work was a running sandcast. In December 2006, I brought the bike back to my friend. He thought about shipping the bike to Brazil but after a long decision of the expense to restore, he decided to sell it to Andy.

That was a good decision because my friend would never have had the time or patience to restore it.

The last time I ever saw that bike, it looked exactly that bad. Believe me, it was uglier before Andy got it!
