Hi all, I just bought a 1976 CB750 F1 supersport for £600. I think she's worth it and runs well and cruises at 90mph. Sadly i lost a side panel on the way home (the left hand side so the electrics are exposed, any help with that would be appreciated. Also it gradually drips oil from it's undercarriage and today the battery went dead. I had been riding with the headlamps on all day, will the battery recharge if i ride her around for a bit? any other advice for a newbie would be appreciated. thanks.

One problem at a time:

Watch ebay for side panals. They come up a bit. Search the archives if you're looking for a repro side-cover.

Oil: Common faults -- stripped oil-plug drain holes / missing oil-plug washers / shifter shaft seals. Find out how much is leaking and where is it leaking from.

Charging issues: Do you have electrical testing equipment? Search the archives for troubleshooting here. Charging a motorcycle battery is a bit different than charging a car battery. Trickle-chargers are useful. Riding around all day (even if this convinces the wife to let you ride around all day) isn't the best approach.

How old is the battery? Give or take, average life is around 3 years. Has it always had fluid above the lead? Riding will get the charge up some, but starting takes a lot of life out, so it's best to start charged up. Battery tenders are great, but you have to check fluid levels a lot because even though they say they won't cook the battery, they will keep them warm enough to evaporate the acid (found this out the hard way). Also, check your generator belt to make sure it's not frayed or loose.

I agree with Uncle Ernie that battery tenders will keep them warm EXCEPT it is the water content that evaporates not the acid. This means that you always top up with distilled or de-ionised water not with more acid.

My CB750 didn't come with a generator belt, where can I get one from quickly....before my water turns to acid and evaporates....... :o

I seem to have passed through some kind of portal, a rip in the space time continum, into a parallel universe of some kind. Where the laws of both physics and motorcycle engineering have become twisted beyond all recognition.

How odd!
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Maier-USA makes replacement panels for 25.99 ea.- US. Dennis Kirk pt.# is 61-510(left), 61-511(right).

Depends, if it's K0-K2, or K3-K5

Of course, European models were different.....
