New to here and to motorcycles...
« on: October 08, 2007, 12:36:49 PM »
Well, I joined this forum a couple weeks ago looking for help on carb re-building and was answered here by many knowledgeable folks. Only after that post did I see this area, so here's my intro: I have only ridden a couple times and have never owned a bike until recently.

I had spied an old motorcycle hanging around my father-in-law's shop down in Iowa (I'm in St. Paul, MN) and finally convinced him to let me drag it out of the corner where it had been collecting quite a bit of dust. Turned out to be a 1978 cb750k, little less than 6,000 on the odometer, sitting for 25 years in the spot he last parked it. It still has plates from '82 on it. He bought it new and can't quite remember why he quit riding it.

After a quick once over with the pressure washer, we found quickly that it wasn't going to turn over and I started digging into the details. I did some web research and talked to friends from work, got a manual and started with points, plug caps and plugs. After making sure I had a spark, I moved onto to the carbs. I thought I did a pretty good job getting them cleaned up and had a friend help me put them back together. Got them back on the bike last weekend and got it started, but wouldn't stay running. That's when I joined up here. Found out I still had some cleaning to do..

Anyway, I really love this site and thought I would share a couple pics of the bike in question. I have been very excited   ever since I started working on the bike (something I've always wanted to do..) and can't wait to make the drive down to Iowa on the weekends. My father-in-law has already begun to refer to it as my bike and has been great as my "Consultant" (as long as I do all the work, he's happy!)

I'm sure I will have a ton more questions in the months to come...!

Welcome from Ontario,
Nice looking bike moham! Looks very clean and only 6k on the clock  :o

BTW.. Did you get all the jets out of the carbs and clean them? 25 yrs of old gas tends to gum them up a bit. Sounds like you're on the right track though.

Well, found out that I didn't get the slow jets pulled and cleaned, therefore the idle problem. That's on the menu for next time along with looking at the seized front disc brake...Also, I think there might be a tiny leak coming from one of the fuel joint connectors (little metal tubes with gasket on either end supplying fuel to the carbs, I think) but can't seem to find any available where I've gotten other parts...any ideas where I could find those? Anyhow, lots to look forward too!

Welcome, we are rowing the boat together. I have never owned a street bike or worked on any of them for that fact and now I'm trying to get a 72 350f running again and it hasn't been tagged since 1982. Wish me luck I'm going to need it. Really I'm in luck that a guy I now work with used to work at the local Honda dealership. He's a wealth of infomation.
