« on: October 08, 2007, 02:44:17 PM »
so i'm starting to install my K5 engine into my F2 frame and it's not jiving. i've struggled over it for the past hour and the holes wont line up.

i'm doing the "laying the engine on its side while i lower the frame" method but it's not working.

getting a little frustrated as i just dingged the crap outta my new powdercoated frame. any suggestions?

Get some blue painters tape and tape some thin rags or towels to the frame rails in order to save that powdercoat. I tried the "laying bare frame over engine method" once and found I actually prefer lifting the engine into a rolling frame.

Engine has to come in from the right side of the frame. Getting the lower rear and lower front mounts lined up can be a pain no matter which method you choose. The K5 motor should fit in your F2 frame. I take many breaks and stare at the puzzle when I get frustrated ;) :)
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

I found stacking 2x4's and other pieces of wood under the engine to make it sit level really helps. Also if you get it crooked pull the frame completely off and start again. It is possible to get an engine stuck in a frame. Good luck, you'll get it eventually.

I find that cussing helps.  ;)  Walking away for 5 minutes helps too.

Definitely tape up the frame though.

i got it now. the frame was tweaked just enought to cause the problem.

the frame sustained a little damage but should be fine. i'll just smooth out the spots and cover with some paint.

jeez, my back is killing me know but i hope it'll be worth it soon  :-\

No pain, no gain.  That applies to more then just fitness.  ;)

The hard part is over, now you get to dig into the fun stuff.

well, the K5 had the exhaust spogots on there but that wasn't the biggest thing hitting. the valve cover did the most damage but it was only to the frame right above that cover, so you won't see it.

Not much help to you now, but should it be needed in the future, here is a method of engine installation and removal that I tried (it worked really well too!) as per Kaceyf2, which I found on the greenspun archives a couple of years ago....

Definitive guide to remove CB750 engine from frame

Well guys this is what you have all been waiting for/ arguing about. The easiest ,hassle free,no damage done (to you or your bike ) way to fit or remove your engine; its so simple my wife and i can do it in less than 15mins. First wrap your bubble wrap/old rags/ cardboard/whatever to protect the frame.... Next get a load of old books/comics/magazines it dont matter just as long as you dont want them any more! Now then for convienience lets say the motor is coming out;put a pile of magazines next to the bike (on the right hand side) next, and this is the clever bit pile up the magazines UNDER your engine/motor and when you get to the point where you can fit no more, tilt the bike (on its centre stand of course) so a friend can get more under so that when you let the bike”rock” back on to both legs of the centrestand there will be support under the engine. undo the bolts ONLY at the back so you can lift the engine at the back while someone slides more magazines under till the engine is sitting at the exact angle it needs to be to slid out. Remember that these motors lift up at the back to come out of the frame. now the front bolts can be removed, (no need to worry the engine is supported) and as it is at the correct angle it can be slid accross onto the pile of magazines that you have put at the side of the bike;get it , its so damn easy and at no point is there any struggle, danger, scratching of the frame or danger of damage to your fingers or the motor or bike! Once you have it sat on the pile of books/ magazines at the side of the bike its an easy lift down to the floor! My wife is a little lass and i am 10stone and we can do this in 15mins. In or out its the same procedure reversed. GOING back in you slide from one pile of books/magazines on the outside of the frame to the one inside the frame, rock the engine to get one bolt in(we found the back easiest) and then just remove the mags/books one at a time till the other bolt holes line up. Obviously do not leave the motor perched on the pile thats next to the bike thats just a resting post on the way to the floor.....And remember make your pile of books/ magazines HIGHER than the bottem frame rails BOTH on the out side and inside of the frame. I kid you not, any body can do this, we did and it is soo simple. WE decided on books and magazines because (a) they dont harm the motor and (b) because by use of the varying thicknesses you can get the motor exactly where you want it... We had to figure a way because there was only us to do it , and i swear to god NOTHING could be easier, if you do it this way you will laugh afterwards and call me a hero. i promise. Kaceyf2

I should have asked if you removed the cam sprocket /breather cover too. That extra height can really be a PITA

Hi Bobby! Yes, that link has been dead for some time now... I forgot to edit it out of the original file I saved it to, and remove it from my post...
