New England Tour - 6 States -700+ miles
« on: October 09, 2007, 06:53:13 AM »
Part One.....

This Past weekend I made my fist truly long range trip, 2.5 days and over 700miles. I had my '75' cb750k with just over 6800 miles on the ticker and my Dad had his '02' Shadow A.C.E. Custom.

We started Friday night at about 5:30pm in northeast RI (Burrillville, me and my father's hometown) and drove on some fantastic backroads to Connecticut where we picked up 395.  We shot up 395 to 290 then to 190... we then took back roads all the way up to Brattleboro, VT. It was about 120 miles and took just over 3hrs to get there.  It was a good first section and allowed us to understand how each other rides better and also helped dictate out pace for the whole ride.

Part 2:

We crashed at a motel in Brattleboro, VT for the night. And the CB had performed flawlessly.  The only issue I have is bad gas mileage(around 32-34mpg).

We woke up at about 5am and got ready for the day.  We packed our bikes up and hit up Bickford's for a nice big meal to start our day. We then left the restaurant at about 6:45am to continue on our trip up to, and across the White Mountains.

The morning was EXTREMELY hazy and the air was thick with moisture.  The water collected on top of everything when we stopped and covered my windshield as we drove.  The temp was already about 64 degrees before the sun even was up.  The ride was going extremely well  until we hit Lincoln, NH...The TRAFFIC!!!!  WOWOW... I very much dislike stop and go on the bike.  We stopped at a "Life is Good" shop and picked up a coupld of things for our loved ones and continued on.

This was our start on a fantastic journey across the Kancamagus Highway.  The air was still hazy, but at this point the sun was making a concerted effort to peek through. The air was clean and it was everything I could hope for, especially riding with my Dad.  We stopped quite a bit along the way to enjoy the views and to rest our butts.  Almost every scenic stop we made I had people coming up and admiring my bike. They all had great stories about the old CB's and how they affected their childhood in one way or another.  Its an interesting thing because my fathers bike is GORGEOUS but never got a second look.  My father was in awe from the attraction the old CB drew.  It was a great feeling.

We finished up the Kancamagus Highway and headed up RT16 to get to Mt. Washington.

Thats where things get REALLY interesting.

We get to Mt. Washington and the skies were grey but visibility was decent.  We could see the top of the mountain without to much trouble.  We got in line for our ascent and made our way to the motorcycle only lane(FANTASTIC!!). We payed our $12 and got our lovely sticker then started our ascent....

The first few miles were great... going fairly slow in 2nd gear seemed to be a nice pace to start.  There were no cars in front of or behind us so there was no pressure and we could just enjoy the ride up.  That, of course, was until we hit about 3000ft.  Then the sky decided that it was going to have a nice little cry session during out ascent.  The rain wasn't very hard.. it was just annoying.  We pulled over and put our rain pants on and some decent gloves and continued the ride up.

Now the cars were starting to ride SSSLLLLLOOOOWWWWW... and not just slow, they would pick up speed then come to an almost stop.  I don't really like starting from a stop on a steep hill but it wasn't SUPER bad.  It SUPER bad came when we got to the dirt section of the road.  It is really amazing how little people know their cars.  The issue with stopping on the dirt was that the front brake only was not cutting it... we were actually rolling back.  Adn taking off was slippery.... After the dirt section it got better to ride up but the rain was coming down a little harder.

We finally made it to the top and got off the bikes for a little rest and went into the building for some water. It was 50 degrees at the top(68 at the bottom) with a 15-20mph wind. We took some pictures then headed back down the mountain.

The ride down the mountain was fantastic.  Put the bike in 1st and let the engine do its thing.  I probably had to hit the brakes no more than 4 or 5 times down the whole mountain.  All in all it is definitely a ride that I will do again.

We then proceeded to head to Lewiston, ME.  This was where our next hotel was and it was about an 80 mile trip from Mt. Washington.  It was about 5:30 and 25 miles into our trip to Lewiston when it started to sleet and hail...WOOHOO... We stopped again to gear up a little more.  This of course was made more interesting because I have no windshield.  While putting an extra layer on I noticed that my phone had fallen out of my holster.  FRIGGEN FANTASTIC...  My dad took a look at his phone and it had a message from my wife saying that someone had found it on the mountain where we had put our rain pants on.  I called the Mt. Washington station. and found out there were closed for the night.  We decided to keep on going then double back in the morning to get the phone...

More later......With pictures..

Last part....

We headed back from Lewiston ME to Mt. Washington to get my phone.... and Looked at the map to take a nice easy route there.  Everything was fine until we went a little too far north on Rt. 26.  We were supposed to go west on Rt. 2 but went all the way through Grafton Notch State Park. It was a FANTASTIC mistake.  The road that goes through this park has to be one of the most fun road I have ever been on.  LOTS of elevation changes and TONS of turns... Techincal to long sweepers.  We went all the way through the park before I looked at the map.  I saw how far we were off and we doubled back... Driving the same road the opposite way was even better.  I push my bike a bit and was able to really feel how great it handles.  MAN did the bike run really nice out there!!!!

We finally got back to Mt.  Washington and got my phone.  The trip back to the mountain was supposed to be an 80 mile trip.  It turned into a 130mile trip.  AWESOME!!

We then made our way down Rt. 16 to Rt. 28... then we hopped on the highway and shot back down to Burrillville.  W got home at about 5:30 on Sunday. Exhausted and full of stories that me and my father can share for quite some time.

Onto the pics.........

As for the 750... it performed flawlessly.  A little hoggy on the gas but thats about it.  It even ran real nice up the mountain.  My fathers bike was huffing an puffing more than mine and its 27yrs younger!!!.. The seat got quite uncomfortable after the fist day and change.  I am guessing its not made for a 250lb guy.  and I REALLY need a winshield for the next long ride.  Other than that, I had no longing for more power and am really happy with the old girl.

Hey Scott, very nice ride report and I like the attention to detail. I also like the google map link so you`ll need to let me know how you did that. You can tell me on Saturday if you come for the Fall Ride (Thursday evening - there will be an email sent about it - details, route etc).

cheers
