500/4 gear ratios
« on: October 11, 2007, 01:26:40 AM »
I've read the 'Thoughts of the Hondaman' FAQ and it is very interesting.  I have a 1975 Honda CB500/4 and it runs very well but the gearing seems a little on the tall side.  In top gear it takes ages to get above 7000 rpm but in lower gears it pulls really fast from 5500 rpm all the way up to the red line.  The carbs have been balanced and all of the usual maintenance tasks performed regularly, i.e valve clearances, cam chain tension, ignition timing, plugs etc.  The engine is in good condition.  Does anyone have any experience of changing sprocket sizes because it is an expensive experiment to start changing these without knowing in what way it will be of benefit.  My bike currently has stock final drive gearing.  I am keen to try this but am also unsure of what is available.  The bike has had this problem for years and it is the only thing I don't like about the bike.  Maybe I just need something with more cc's?

Just try going to a 1 tooth smaller front sprocket, will only cost around 25 bucks and you shouldn't need to change the chain unless its all the way back already.
