CB400F oil pan stripped - 350f part / helicoil available
« on: July 18, 2005, 09:59:06 AM »
Did my first oil change this weekend on my yellow '76 400f and my crush washer wouldn't crush enough.  'Crank it some more' I thought.  So of course I stripped it right out.

I can't be the first one on these boards to have done this.  First option is to change the entire pan.  I'd like to avoid this as I still don't have a service manual for proper torque values.  2nd option is a helicoil.  Has anyone done this on the 17mm drain plug?

Any idea if the 350f pan will work?

Local cycle salvage wants $70!  Guess I'll try helicoil first.

400 oil pan has a middle number of 377 so its unique to the 400 and a 350 will probably not fit Part number11210-377-000 problem is Dave Silver, Western Hills and CMS all show no stock so it looks like you are stuck with finding a used one or helicoiling if possible which i think is 10mm none standard thread and if i was doing it i would want the pan off

what about going to the auto parts store and trying one of those over sized self taping drain plugs they offer. Bet that would work. Or just tap out to the next size and put a copper washer on a short bolt, I'd imagine a helicoil that size could get pricey.

I actually tried one of the self-tapping in approximately the same size, but the pan is now cracked.  Waiting for the part.  Just read your response, lrutt.  I did the cracking as part of my 'cheap options first' routine, not based on your suggestion, so don't feel guilty.  ;-)
