Topic: Couple of ? about my engine. Pics Included

Ok finally got my engine to turn over.  Took the stater cover off and was able to turn the rod that goes through the engine and everything looks good so far.  Got a couple of question though.  I know I cant get the engine out quite yet so I started working on it in the frame. 


First, how do you get this chain off?  I spun the motor looking for a link that disconnects but couldnt find anything.



Second, How in the hell can I get this bolt out?  And what would cause all the oil on the engine?



Third, Does this bolt come out or am I just an idiot and cant figure out how to get it out?



Last one for now.  What is this piece called?  you can see where the fins were broken off and I need to replace that.



I also decided to break out the sawzall today and took off a few un-needed brackets.  Didnt really think I wanted to do any frame cutting but it looks a lot better with out them.

First photo - The chain will come off by unbolting the two bolts holding the sprocket on.  I had an engine that was siezed but it froze in such a way I could still see both..  amazing.

Second photo - I had to grind that bolt off mine.  Do a seach on "oil filter bolt" to witness the challenges with that.  I had an oil leak around there too.  I replaced the seals in the top end (all of them) and stopped it ($60 eBay).

Third photo - try putting a hydraulic jack under the engine and take the pressure off of it.  Then, I usually leave the nut on it and tap.  That way, you don't maul the threads..

Fourth photo - That's commonly referred to as a "jug."

Go easy on the whole sawzall thing...

STEP AWAY FROM THE BIKE...SLOWLY!!

First one, you dont break the chain, you read the manual and remove as per instructions.

 Did I mention you need a manual??

2nd one, VISE-GRIPS

3rd one, use penetrating oil and wait, tap it a few times with a normal size hammer, block of wood or aluminum in between is a great idea. Patience is Key.

Read the manual some more..

4th one, that thing is called a cylinder, but the cylindrical parts are hiding inside..!!.. why? that defies explanation, but trust me it is the cylinder..


I have a question for you. Do you often charge into taking stuff that you do not even know what it is called, apart??...and saw stuff off that does who knows what??

Try to get a manual & take your time before you go further..

Thanks for the info.  Yes I am the kind of guy that likes to do things the hard way.  Tried to order a manual this week and after i placed my order they emailed me back saying they didnt have it in stock so I said f**k it.  Never was a reader anyways.  FMC Thats kind of what I thought about the chain but i figured i would ask before hand.  Theres some stuff that I am pretty sure I can do but then theres some that scare me.  The oil filter bolt is a pain in the ass.  I have tried vice grips and the bolt is now round.    754 the first thing I did sunday afternoon when i got the bike was take the whole thing apart including the electrical then put it all back together so I could take it apart again.  I know I know.  Thats why I post here because I get great advice from many perspectives instead of one from a hard to read manual.  As far as the rest of it goes I have a friend who is a motorcycle mechanic who is going to help me take the rest of it apart tomorrow.  Anyways thanks again guys.  I will update when I find out more.

Shorten a socket and weld it to the oil filter bolt, then leve it on there..best thing to put on there..

By weld I mean as in Carefully..

The manuals for your CB500 are available free for download in PDF form.  Don't make another move without them.  Read them over and over again.

if the PO was smart, he used red loctite on the 2 cam chain sprocket bolts.  you never want to have them come loose.  DAMHIK!

if the bolts don't come free easily, stop and use heat to break down the red loctite.

Well I downloaded that manual tintin.  Thanks for the link.  I will print it out at work on monday.  We will see how it goes.

There are 2 way you can go on that oil filter bolt.  You can get an aftermarket one that has a larger hex head, or just use the stock one.  On the stock one, use only a(correct size) 6 point socket when installing/removing it.  These bolts get rounded when someone is too cheap to get metric tools, or even just an open end wrench.  An open end wrench only puts the force on 2 of the 6 sides, a 12 point socket hits all 6 sides, but only catches the end of each side.  A 6 point socket hits all 6 sides and has greater contact over each side of the hex.

Well thank you to tintin for giving me the link to the repair manual .  Anyways got the top of the motor taken apart , which was not as bad as i thought.  And got that freaking bolt out, but I think i am going to have to replace it. Here are the pics of everything. 

This is the part that I need to replace.



These are the pistons on the left.  They look like they need some work.  What is the best way to clean these or do you think I should just replace them?  Is it bad if any of the particles get into the lower part of the engine?  The piston clips seem to be loose around the piston, are they supposed to be that way?


These are the 2 right ones.  The only one that looks bad is the far right one.


These looked to be in decent shape but I do not know exactly what to look for.  Do they look like they work?  All the cam shaft bearing surfaces have no scratches on them.

I'm no expert, but you're going to want to be real careful putting the valve cover back on.
You need to hold the rockers up (with elastic bands) before trying to fit the cover or you will bend valves.
Do a search and read the manual.

K I will keep an eye on those.  Have a friend coming over this evening to take a look and hopefully most of it will be alright and I can have the engine back together soon.
