gas is coming out of my airbox....
« on: October 11, 2007, 02:18:38 PM »
I have been riding my 78' 750 f2 all summer... it sat for a week and a half while it was rainging.... sunny day came and i went for a ride.... as i pulled into the store parking and stopped gas started pouring out of the left side seem on the stock airbox.... rode home and watched it.. no gas while riding but as soon as i stopped again it started pouring out.... where would it be coming from?

Plugged overflow + stuck floats.

Your carbs. It sounds like your floats aren't closing one or more of your needle valves all the way. Could be some crud from the tank, could be worn needles, could be a bad float. It happens periodically with my 750 if I don't shut off the petcock when I park the bike. Always turn off the petcock when you park the bike. Always. To stop the flow without pulling and cleaning the carbs, like you probably should, try tapping on your carbs to try to vibrate the needle back into the seat when it starts to leak.

I actually figured it out... and i feel like an idiot... My gas cap wasn't completley on and when i turned gas was coming out of the cap and going into the overflow drain under the gas cap door.. which coincidently drained on top of my airbox giving the illusion of gas coming out of the airbox.... thanks for the replies.... i guess i am as stupid as I look.

Probably wise to run the hose from the overflow drain all the way down to swingarm pivot area so that gas ends up on the street rather than on top of the motor or exhaust.  Run the tubing from the carb overflow / bowl drain nubs (you do have tubing going to each bowl don't ya?) to the same spot.

Yeah, and always remember to close the petcock, especially if your floats stick. Otherwise, you might just be a total moron and START A FIRE in your airbox. Luckily, I never did that. Oh wait... I DID do that  :o
