Removing rear peg mounting tubes from frame
« on: September 09, 2007, 05:16:00 PM »
Hey all:

I couldn't find any threads dealing with this, but I am interested in removing the rear peg mounting tubes from the frame.  I know its been done, I believe I've seen it on some of Carpy's bikes, but I'm curious if anyone here has done it and what tricks I might need to know.  I'm hoping the main tube of the frame is solid thru where the mounting tube is attached and that I can just cut it off and grind it down.  I love the clean cafe look without them.

Has anyone done this?
Any concerns with the structural integrity of the frame?
Tips and tricks?

Thanks all

my bike came with the rear pegs already cut off and about an inch of stump left on the frame...I just ground the remaining bits off - they are hollow pipe - butt welded to the tube frame....I don't believe any structural integrity is lost with this modification - but I'm not an engineer either.....

Have a look at the pics in my signature. If you click on the one where the bike is at the back of the van, you'll get a better view of what you can do.
The section that replaces the tubes for the rearsets is available from M3 Racing, it just needs welding on.

Both tubes are hollow.

Carefull grinding after cutting them off makes it invisible

I removed mine with a hack saw and then ground off the remaining bit.  However, I wasn't paying too much attention while grinding, and put a groove in the frame tube with the grinding wheel.  Not too bad, but it'll need a touch of bondo before painting.

I took a Sawzall to mine on the old CB750.
Alittle hand filin and some spraypaint and I was gold !

I would of ditched the ones on my CB450 but I used them to mount my rearsets... ;D

my exhaust just hangs from the headers, but i wouldn't recommend this unless you have a light muffler.

I am not a professional engineer, but from what I remember from some undergraduate engineering courses the mounts do not carry any load unless your feet are on them.  Also to cover my butt, you should not modify the frame in any way as changes may make it unsafe to ride.  What you do with your bike is your choice.  Just don't try to pin a broken frame or worse on me or anyone else based on advise you received from a public forum, its up to you to do the proper research before making any modifications that may effect your frame's integrity.

With that said, they were the second thing after the helmet lock to be cut off of my bike just prior to the center stand and side panel mounts.  I have seen some extreme things done to these old CB's (helped a friend mill out a new top triple clamp for his chopper) but always with the understanding that any changes may result in negative handling characteristics.

Some exhausts (Winning Performance I think) had an upswert muffler.. that had a strap going up to the top shock mount.

The footpeg triangle is not that stiff, you can probably make it flex with your hand, by pushing towards the middle of the swingarm..

On or off should not matter till that day you decide to go back to 4-4 pies..
