Topic: This doesn't look right-Bent motor mount

This isn't suppose to look like this is it?  It's one of the really long bolts (threaded at both ends) for mounting the engine. I put it next to a straight rod to emphasize the "bent-ness." Do I need a new one?  If so, where can I get one?

yes you need a new one , never seen that happen before(and on both ends no less)

the bad news: good f'ing luck finding one , i would keep my eye on parts lots on ebay
the good news: it's not that costly, if you go the parts lot route

 Usually those get bent when the footpegs have a violent collision with the ground, or garage doorway(in my friends case). Don't know what kind of bike you have but you might want to check the "parts for sale" section of this site or post a listing in the "parts wanted". As spikeybike points out, there is always ebay.

Or they get bent upon removal from the frame....I did it as well...

I had been searching for a set of those 3 long motor mount bolts for a looooong time and had no luck here on the forum or on eBay. They're listed on the Honda microfiche at about $25 each, but now that I'm mounting rearsets I'm going to be making my own shorter version of the footpeg bolt.

It can be straightened.  Don't bother with trying to locate another bolt.  Find a local machine shop with press, and any machinist worth a hoot can do it. (without screwing it up).

I had a guy at a local machine shop make me one out of stainless steel.

You can get threaded rod of the correct size and pitch, cut it to length and use nuts on both ends.  This seems to be the only option (Sparty's custom made bolt would be another) when a person gets the idea that they want to replace all the fasteners on their bike with stainless ones.  Stainless would be as good idea as once you cut it to length, you can smooth and polish the cut end so that it both looks nice and won't rust.

I thought they were supposed to be bent after looking at mine and some others.

I think I'll straighten mine with a 5# hammer or make one from cold rolled or stainless 1/2" stock. Does 1/2" work or does it need to be turned down to 12mm?

By the way I wouldn't  use all thread rod, it's too soft for the job, plus the threads would dig into the aluminum cases.

They would be metric with maybe a rolled thead. If they are that hard to find,  I could probably make some up... I would start with 12mm (not sure of Dia) ground stock or drill rod..
 
 AllThread or Reddi-Rod might be of low grade and would be undersize where it counts, ie keeping motor where it should be..

 Easy way to staighten..tap the thead size into a pc of 3/4 bar..then thread on as far as it will go..chuck in lathe and soft hammer till relatively staight to the eye.. should be fine..

Stainless threaded rod can be be had in metric and standard sizes.  It won't be quite as strong as the stock bolts but it should do the job.  The european supplier where I got all the stainless hardware for my 750 project recommended the rod but I didn't want spend the $ at the time.  The rod would be just slightly undersized but I doubt that would be much of an issue once things are torqued.  The stock bolts don't fit snugly in the crankcase anyways. As to it messing up the alloy cases . . .the stock bolts are typically driven through with a hammer undoubtedly scuffing things up on the way . . .All this said, I would certainly straighten out the stock pieces, yours don't look to be beyond salvage.  If looks matter, having the stock pieces cleaned up and plated would be an option.

I just sent a whole set of engine bolts to a SOHC4 member.  Anyone that picks up parts bikes is bound to have a few laying around.  In fact, you have already gotten a couple of offers.      That's what I love about this forum, you can find almost any part you need and they are practically given away.

Hey all, Ive got a few out in my shed for the 750 but damn dont let that stop you from riding  threaded rod will work JUST fine trust me.  But from the sounds you can make your own or STAIGHTEN THAT ONE good luck have fun Craig in Maine.
