CB550 Cafe Interceptor - Storage Compartment
« Reply #225 on: April 02, 2011, 06:00:45 PM »
A bit of extra clearance is needed because the plug will be the inside of the storage compartment and the finished part will be slightly larger due to the carbon fiber and Kevlar cloths are applied over the plug.

Wow.  You've managed to actually get me excited about storage.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Thanks Dave

I used Kevlar in the cafe seat and total agree about the difficulty cutting the stuff. If it can stop bullets, you know it’s gonna be murder to work with, but I only use it in areas there mounting hardware will be secured.

I’ve been a bit slow getting things done on the bike, but the storage compartment is finally finished.
It conveniently slips right in and fastens to the stock air filter housing hardware.
You’ll also notice I put the idle screw there too.

Brother Joey

Thank you very much; it’s an honor coming from the King of Creativity.
My ideas are quite simple but I try to execute them the best I can.

I am not the King of Creativity! Hahahaha! I am a simple builder just like everyone else man.

You do not give yourself enough credit Brother FunJimmy, I read in one of your posts that you work with basic tools that most people have, which is the same way I build. The parts that you build show without question your dedication to handcrafted quality, and in my opinion that means something.

Thanks Brother Joey.

Your complements mean a lot to me.

I do take pride in building the best parts and the best bike that I can, and they continue to get better each time.
I’d love to have more elaborate tools and machines, but the fact of the matter is I just don’t have space for them.
Here's a pic of FunJimmy's Lab.  ;D

Being in a small space really makes you appreciate the benefits of being organized, eh Jimmy?  My last one was basically that small as my roommate insisted on having her car in the garage, so I got the other half for my stuff.

Ya. I'm normally not too bugged by the space, or lack thereof, unless I accidentally prang something along the way. We’ve talked about knocking it down and building a double, but that would just lead to more bikes……….wait a minute?

Cheers  ;D

Agreed Jim, don't touch it until it finally lets you down, cool looking as is.

If it gets out of hand just throw a good mountain goat up there.  ;)

I don't think you wanna do that - my guess is that whatever water resistance is left in that roof is due to the vegetation, not the shingles. :)

This is surprising, I always pictured a couple CNC mills and 20-30 helpers turning out trick parts for your fleet of bikes  ;D

On another note have you had any trouble with the compound slide on your lathe? I have basically the same one and have trouble with it deflecting.

Oh and it might be a better idea to skin that goat and put it over any future leaks  :P

Brent, I’ve been counting my lucky stars for years now and it just keeps on going & growing. It made a bit more sense when the neighbors wickedly mutilated Maple tree over hung the garage, but now it just stands out as odd.

Thanks! Sometimes it feels like my whole life is an allusion too.  :o

For an inexpensive Lathe, it’s been great. I haven’t had much trouble with slide deflection, but I mostly turn aluminum and that doesn’t load it up much. I’ve had more trouble with the electronic controller though. It’s pooched again so no lathe projects at the moment.

Just catching up on your project. It's looking great. A few posts back you mention that you anodize your aluminum parts. Do you do it yourself? And if so, can you recommend any how to sites. I'm interested in giving it a try.
Keep up the good work,

Thanks for tuning in.

No, I don’t do my own anodizing. There is a fella not far from me that will run them through with other jobs for a case of beer. My understanding is that all the chemicals required to anodize at home would be worse than the meth lab down the road and how do you dispose of the chemicals after you’re done?

Stop by a local anodizer with a part or two and chat about your hobby. You might be surprised how helpful they can be when it’s just a hobby project that you do for the pride of it.

Well it looks like I’m down to the last couple of decisions before spending the summer racking up the miles.
I have a black Kerker megaphone and a chrome one and I think I have already made up my mind which one I like better, but I’d like your opinion too.

Kinda partial to the black, but I'm a chrome whore so could go either way. Primarily responding to thank you for my new background picture. The front on with the black.
