76F - what color would you paint it?
« on: October 14, 2007, 02:16:49 PM »
Ok so I was just kicking around some ideas, not really looking to follow through at the moment, but....

what colors do you think would look good with the stock 1976 F pinstripes for the candy red model? I was toying with the idea of repainting one of my own 76 Fs (I currently own 3 ) and I want something that looks somewhat stock but was not a color from the factory. I have seen black with the F pinstripes and although it looks very good I am not a fan of black bikes. I thought a Dark navy style blue would look good, as well as a hunter green color, but what else do y'all think?

As a secondary question, do you think a cb750F would look good in white with the 76 F blue pinstripes that are on the sulfer yellow model?

First thing that popped into my mind was a crimson red pearl with black pinstripe. Not flake, pearl. Dunno why either, I hate red.

I don't think the white and blue would make a nice combo, but that's just my opinion.

I think people just associate the F's with red because the 76F came in that candy anteres red color and it just looks good. If you look at candy red it is very similar in effect go GM's crimison pearl pain despite it being a candy over metalflake color because it is so subtle.

one idea I was kicking around was GM's 1960s burgundy color. It is not a metallic or pearl, just a clean solid color with a nice dark look to it (not my car BTW):

With White and gold stripes I figured 1968 pontiac verdoro Green would look good:

I was also thinking Nocturne Blue might look nice:

I think that is either gulfstream aqua or aquamarine. I am not a big fan of colors like that on bikes, reminds me too much of the late 1980s-1990s. Plus I don't think it would work with the stock stripes and give the effect I am looking for.

looks good on a GTO though...

 8) 8)

A guy I used to work with had a green GTO tucked away in his garage, I can say with confidence that it is, by a fair margin, the worst handling vehicle I have ever driven :o

But my god what an engine 8) 8)  He'd spent a small fortune with one the UK's premier yank iron specialists and it showed in every pore ;D

My 67 Goat was red. That was a nice shade of red. A bright red not a deep red (if any of that makes sense). How about GTO red with ghost flames, a pearl coat AND the factory style decal in your choice of colors over the ghost flames. Silver metal flake flame to bring the red out. One of the guys has a red with a cafe seat, Rocking M, that looks really nice. I emailed repro decals to ask why they don't have the tank decal for my 75 Sapphire Blue and they said to let me know what colors and they can do it. With that in mind you could go with just about any color and still have the factory style decal in your choice of colors.

afe has all of the decals for the supersports including sapphire blue. www.cbdecals.com

I have some expirence pinstriping, but I am not sure whether I am going to hand paint the stripes or use decals.

The look I am going for is I want someone to look at the bike and say "I didn't know honda made them in that color". This pretty much means ghost flames are out, as are any other signals that it might not be stock. A good solid Bright  "arrest me" red is a really nice color but I just do't think it will look good on my honda.

I just happen to like the white and gold pinstripe the best and there are a lot of colors that work with that combination.  The cb350F had bacchus candy olive with that same color pinstripes so I know that is a safe bet, and there are plenty of colors that are not candys that come close to candy bacchus olive (like vedoro green or jeep's moss green).

Another color I have been kicking around is a charcoal gray kind of color. It is actually a 1967 Buick Rivera color (despite here being on a 67 GTO):

The only thing that made me think of white with bule stripes was if you look at cars and bikes that have them it is a striking cobination. The shelby gt350 and 1969 kawasaki h1 come to mind.

I like that one too because the color samples are shown over curved surfaces, much like our Honda tank & side covers. Sometimes this can make a big difference in color selection. Most automotive paint color chips are flat-rectangle shaped as cars tend to have large sections of mostly flat surfaces. A car body with lots of curves shows off its color quite well.

Like this example:

I'm thinking of going silver with black stripes for my 78 750k. I saw a new Honda that was silver and black accents and I thought it looked pretty good.

My 1969 GTO (sold) was Expresso Brown with a gold interior- Beautiful!!!  My 1970 Challenger RT/SE is Plum Crazy Purple,  while my 1971 Road Runner is Sno-White (both projects, still have).

I have seen a very nice burnt orange metallic on some newer Dodges, and a similar Ford color.  I also kinda like that Olive green metallic found on some Pontiac Aztecs/S10 pick-ups- Really glows in sunlight.

yeah, I don't think anybody is going to mistake that for a "stock" paint job which is kinda what I am going for. It is very very nice though.

I have been playing around in photoshop. Pics to come later to night.

ok so I goofed around with this for a while last night and here is what I got:

Stock Red:

Dark blue:

Dark Burgundy:

Dark Green:

Charcoal Gray:

The charcoal really surprised me on the look, came out way better than I expected. Looks awsome and really like something honda might have done in the 70's. So, what do y'all think?

there was a guy in canada that used that alsa chrome paint as a base to lay candy over with his kawasaki. I think he was charging over $700 for the paint work using those paints. I looked into spraying those a while ago and it is beyond my abilities but he got it to work.

The only down side is that the candy burns out quicker and the chrome begins to yellow after a while.

PPG has realeased the HOT WHEELS spectraflame paint for real vehicles this year, the red stripe is spectraflame over gray base:

I have seen black with the F pinstripes and although it looks very good I am not a fan of black bikes.

I thought about it again but still not digging the black, for some reason it looks too plain.

I really dig the Blue. If I could paint that skillfully it would be Blue with white stripe.
