CB550 front sprocket play
« on: October 14, 2007, 10:53:57 PM »
hi Everyone-

I ran into a possible issue when I was putting back together my 76 CB550. The 17T drive sprocket seems to have some side to side play. I didn't notice it when I took the sprocket off. There is about 0.5-1.0mm of side "play" on the sprocket. This is with the sprocket plate on, and the plate bolts tightened.

If that's not clear, what I mean is that (looking at the photo) if I grab the sprocket and pull it towards me, it will slide back and forth (side to side in relation to the bike) on the shaft.

Is this normal? What should I do, if anything? I couldn't find an mention of what the normal value for this clearance is in the Clymer or Honda sevice manuals.

Thanks guys, that's good news. I think maybe with all the crud in there I didn't notice it when I took it off. I get a bit paranoid with any parts that are involved in spinning a heavy chain right underneath my a$$!

Your sprocket teeth are worn out.

Loose on shaft is okay.

yeah, they are. I am using the existing sprockets (drive, and rear) and chain while I get the bike back together, and tune it up. I am going to replace both sprockets at the same time, and get a new chain.
