Rusty exhaust pipe flanges
« on: July 18, 2005, 05:12:34 PM »
Took my recently restored CB500 to the Mid Ohio Vintage Bike event this weekend.  There was lots of rain.  When I got home I found the finned exhaust pipe flanges all rusty.  I had completely cleaned them up during my restoration.  Have any of you guys got a way to keep these things rust free??  Thanks.

You could try paint or clear coating them.  That would keep the air and rain from getting to the metal and rusting or oxidizing them.

I had mine re-chromed once but they still rusted right away. I'd like to try some of the jet hot coating. Looks almost like chrome and is not supposed to come off. Might be worth buying an extra set and having it done. That's the only rusty spot on my whole bike.

You must protect your car your mobilhome/boat /trailer / Truck  and of cours your Honda the same way you protect your
Harley Davidson or your Indian  , the only way is to polish you have paint polish  vinyl/nylon/rubber polish and you have som universal polish you can use on MCmotors on forks and on Exhaust Mufflers , 2>4 times in the seasions  for protect and polish to get it to shine , What a nice bike you have .  We love to heare thise  don`t we all!

Thanks for all the feedback.  I took the flanges off today to clean and polish them.  I found that the chrome was completely gone on many surfaces.  They are in phosphoric acid to get rid of the rust.  I plan to try high temperature paint before I start looking for replacements.  Does anyone have experience in etching the chrome to get better paint adhesion?

Just wanted to share my success.  After cleaning up the flanges in phosphoric acid over night I painted them with high temperature (1000 deg F) aluminum paint.  After baking the parts in my wife's oven for 2 hours at 350 deg F I put them back on and have run them for an hour or so on the road with no peeling or bilstering.  I doubt they will rust for quite a while.

CB500_k2,

What affect did the phosphoric acid have on the remaining chrome?

The phosphoric acid did not appear to do anything to the chrome which remained.  After I removed the flanges from the acid I used a wire brush to remove the plating which was peeling off.  The chrome which remained was as shiny as new.
