BIGGER TALLER Tank
« on: October 15, 2007, 03:01:12 PM »
Whats the best way to increase fuel capacity on a CB750 while using a stock seat? Any aftermarket available or maybe piggyback/weld/cut 2 tanks into 1?
It'd be nice to have a taller tank and lean some weight on it w/ a tankbag as a pad. And get more than 100 or so miles per tank.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "the best way".  The cheapest and easiest way is to strap an extra gas can to the back of your seat with a bungee net, and then just pour it in when you need it. ;D

If you're really into welding, fabricating and painting, it would be cool to do a stock-looking tank that's slightly wider and slightly taller, but looks pretty much the same.

I've seen that done on 24 hour endurance races for a superbike Suzuki GS1000. They cut the top-off 1 tank, and the bottom-off another, then welded them together. Sounds like a potential real hack-job for a 1st timer. Hopefully I'll find somebody that will say "been-there-done-that, piece-o-cake".

Not sure what year 750 you are referring to as seat and tank designs changed.  The 77-78K and essentially identical auto tanks hold 5.1 gallons of fuel.  My K8 gets around 50mpg so thats over 200 miles between fill ups.  Don't know how well the late tanks would mesh with the earlier seats but I'm sure someone here does.

Tracy once made a 5 gallon touring tank for a cb750 that worked with the stock seat. There was one on ebay a month or so back that was nos and sold stupid cheap. I should have bought it but I was strapped at the time. The fiberglass works, and such all had similar ones too but they are rarer than the racing tanks.

How many gallons are you looking to add? Combining 2 tanks top to bottom will give you 7 (closer to 8) gallons which is more fuel than any motorcycle needs to carry. Most endurance racers (dirt and street) carry about 5-6 gallons.

There are plenty of custom tank mfgs in the harley aftermarket that could probably fab you up a tank, what it would cost I have no idea. Evan wilcox would do it for you in aluminum but he is expensive. I did see a 5.5 gallon roadrace tank he built once for a cb750...it was pure art.

Personally I would go fiberglass rather than metal, adding all that extra weight (gasoline is approx 6lbs per gallon) I would probably want to take some of it off in other ways

Does a 76F tank have 5 gallons like the 77/78 and does it fit an earlier CB750 w/ stock seat?

My thoughts exactly, seems like ya got more prob's then tank style.

You need to do a tune or synch or something!  At highway speed (under 85) I get around 40 mpg; that's about 200 miles/tank.  I typically stop and fill around 120-130 on my commute.  On the backroads (50-60 mph) I get close to 50 mpg.  When I ride over 85 (naw, never) my mileage drops to low 30s.

If you're getting 100 miles/tank, you must be drag racing.

The 77/78F tanks are slimmer than the same year Ks and hold 4.6 gallons.  The 75/76Fs are also slimmer but I don't know the specs for them.

I'm flogging the living daylights outa this sucka every friggin time I've been on it. From the way it sounds at full rip, I think it likes it. I know I do. ;D

All my CB750's hit reserve around 100-110 miles. Whats that, 2.7 gallons?
