CB650 or something newer
« on: October 03, 2007, 11:26:12 AM »
I'm in the market for a relatively low priced bike, say $2500 or less.  6 years ago I had an 81 CB650 that I paid $200 for and put about another $600 into.  It was a fun bike but always had quirks to it.  I'm debating between another such bike or just paying more and getting a 90's CB750 that would be in better condition.  This bike would be for fun rides, not commuting or touring.  Talk me into the SOHC!

All my rides are fun.  Join the ranks of the 1979 CB650Z.  You most likely will not see another one on the road in the US.  It was a 1 year production bike, and it can be had for <$2500.  The only thing that is difficult to come by is replacement side covers.  Everything else is pretty standard Honda stuff.  These are great bikes that you can mold to whatever you want it to be.  The SOHC CB can be a cruiser, sport-tourer, race bike, commuter, cafe, hooligan, whatever you want it to be.  That's the great thing about standard motorcycles, they perform pretty well at a variety of tasks.  If you do get a newer/DOHC bike, it might be a bit faster and handle a bit better, but it won't have the class that the '70's SOHC CB's have.

Given the time of year, you can buy a lot of motorcyle for $2500.  I have a blast on my '82 650, but if I did it again I would probably shop for a pristine '85 650 (blue, to be different) or a V45 Sabre.  I don't think the SOHC board would ostrasize you.  I would also consider the '93 Nighthawk.  I let someone else figure why I've singled out 1993.

I've got one and absolutely love it. However, I like the styling of the '80 to '82 better.

Ok, what's special about the 93?  Only year for a certain color?
