What cost should I expect when getting my jugs bored?
« on: October 15, 2007, 11:56:25 AM »
Hey All,
I have spent the past couple days tracking down and ordering all the parts I need for my motor rebuild.  I was just wondering what I should expect in terms of having my jugs bored out.  I have a 550 and bought the 555 bore kit so there isn't much to be bored, but I was just curious to what you guys may have spent on boring work in the past...........................Thanks Chris

About $200 CND two years ago to fit a 555 kit.  I also had it decked.

Most of the shops around here charge around $50 per cylinder.

I would think it depends on how much the person doing it has to take out of the bore.

To achieve 555 (553cc) would require 59mm pistons so you are only going bigger by .5mm.

If your block has already had its first re-bore, then you are not going to be paying for anything more than its second re bore.

It's not like doing a big bore kit where several mm have to be taken out, requiring several boring's of each cylinder.

That old saying time is money is true here. Machine shop rates vary from $ 55.00 per hour for small shops to $90.00 for larger or busier ones. It should take 2-3 hours including set-up, machining, deburring, and honing for a quality job.

How timely!  I just got my jug and head back 3 weeks ago from my local machine shop.  They bored the jug for 65mm pistons and did a valve job (plus  installed my titanium retainers, HP springs, and billet keepers).

The cost was $48.50 per hole for the bore,  and $88 for the valve job.  With cleaning the parts and shop supplies,  the total was $317.79 out the door.
