Hello – looking for answers to this problem:

Three years ago I had my cb650c bike running and one day it was very hard to start. It finally gave up without even getting a click at the solenoid, and even after charging the battery no click. I changed out the solenoid and no luck… then a neighbor who was a “mechanic” came over and tried helping – removing the wiring harness for the solenoid and then playing around connecting the wires. Since then I don’t have any power going to instrument cluster but I do get power at the mains on the solenoid – if I short them the engine cranks but of course no starting.

Can I ask for two things:
-   the wiring scheme for the solenoid. Some are no brainers (the mains from battery to starter) but the color schemes for the others would be good.
-   What to look for and set ohmmeter test points to check for continuity or integrity.

I’m hoping I’m not looking at a CDI, rectifier or ignition coils… I’m guessing the rectifier is a possibility since it does control charging at the battery.

Thanks!

cool! Thanks! I'm printing out a large color version of it right now...

I should make mention that I checked all the fuses - they're all ok but I'm still going to try to clean off any oxide from the sockets and fuses themselves. I also need to check the killswitch but looking at the wiring diagram I dont think that would affect the instrument cluster not getting 12VDC.

Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Hi, I got the 81 cb650c, I had the same problem. was corrosion of the connector that plugs into the ignition. The unit where the key goes in.

After cleaning the connections, apply a small amount of dielectric grease before reconnecting. This will help prevent future corrosion. You can get a very small tube at any auto parts place.
