76 CB750K Cafe project underway!
« on: October 16, 2007, 07:53:57 AM »
So the project has begun, the parts pile in my den from ebay, Z1, PartsNmore, cb750cafe...you name it.

I'll upload pics of the bike in it's current state tonight, for now i'll just let you guys know it's a 76 cb750k with 27k miles showing, a little beat up...been sitting for a while.

My plans are:
Dyna Ignition
New wiring
Dyna Coils + wires
New top end gaskets for motor
Polish covers
Allen head bolts throughout
16" Rear wheel
New paint
New side covers
Cafe seat(one that is a two seater and another that is single)
New tires
New front spokes
New wheel bearings, SA bearings...
Clubman bars
Powdercoat frame
Frame repair kit
New Battery
Rebuid carbs
K and N filters

That's it for now...I have most of the parts. For now all I have pics of here at work are the seat that Steve Carpenter from CB750 Cafe sent me. He originally built the seat for the bassist from Green Day but at the last second he decided he wanted a one seater. So when I asked Steve for a 2 seater Cafe seat he sent me pics of this one and I jumped on it. Looks kinda like the seat on my Norton and should fit the bike well as far as design goes.

BTW, not to post a million times in my own thread before anyone else. I'm thinking of getting the Motion Pro push pull throttle and some custom throttle cables. Anyone have any experience with fit and quality of their stuff? I've used some of their tools and they seem great...

That is the exact part that I have on my 76F. The funny part i that the actual throttle drum looks identicle to the stock drum. They could have come out of the same mold.  ;)  You'll have to get an additional Start/Engine Cut-off switch, though.

Lookin' good so far. Keep us up to date!!

For now just keep it stock, the motor is grungy but in great running shape....short of some electrical gremlins. This winter is just going to be frame and chassis upgrades, next winter i'll do the engine upgrades if need be. I'm still trying to decide what shocks to go with and what forks or fork upgrades to mess around with...For now i'm just concentrating on the safety and looks aspect. I got a cheapo MAC 4 into 1 all black exhaust for now too...not sure what long term exhaust plans are.

Thanks for the warm welcome btw!

Sorry, pictures coming soon! For now quick question. I got a Harley rear wheel complete with a good Continental tire on ebayl...and I have the spoke kit to get it to work with my Honda hub...but how can I tell if this is the right kind of Harley wheel?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140146488785

Not a great price, but the tire is in outstanding shape...in hindsight I should ahve just bought the LoudFastnUgly kit...but I didn't find their kit until after I had won this on ebay. Oh well...

Here's some before pics...sorry the one is a little blurry. Got a bunch of it stripped down last night but no pics of that yet. Oh and is it normal for this year of 750 to have the wires from the controls go THROUGH the handlebar?!

looks like a great bike for the project...a bit rough, but should clean up nicely and everything looks like it's there. Sounds like you have some great plans, looking forward to watching it all come together. I think you should keep the panthers on the sidecovers...lol.

Colin,

Looks like you are in for a fun project.  Remember.... PICS, PICS, PICS and then more PICS!!!!

It is normal for the control wires to be run through the stock bars.  If you change out the bars, you can either drill them to accept internally run wires, or you can notch the control bodies where the wires run out so that they can be run on the outside of the bars without being crimped.

Good luck.

Lol, the panthers make it faster! No the panthers, skull and random other stickers are going bye bye....stripping everything down and getting a nice fresh coat of "Citrus Explosion" A color I won't describe but will be quite spectacular to see. Yeah i'm taking pictures through every step of the process. Still deciding about the bars whether to drill holes or notch the housings...I might be using completely aftermarket start button assemblies and turn signal assemblies and whatnot though...so we'll see. I got the clubman bars on last night and that alone makes it look sooo much better...and that seat...well it's junk. The hinges have been redrilled and mounted with SHEETROCK screws to the base of the seat. Good thing I have that seat from Carpy lol.

Most after market controls will come set up for running the wires along the bars, and not in them, hence if you run the wire in the bars, there will be a hole in the housing you'll have to deal with. (Plus I've heard that running wires inside clubmans is a pain in the Arse). Either way can be made to look cool, though.

Looks like a great project!  I am interested in the motionpro throttle as well.  I wonder if the stock cables work with it or if something custom is required.....obviously cable length will be an issue with your clubmans.

They said I need custom ones...but i ordered just the throttle and am going to see how exactly it is different...cable length isn't that big of a deal with the clubmans just a matter of routing things so it doesn't get messy. I'm going to run just a start button on the right hand side with the motionpro throttle i decided then try and find a clutch lever perch and universal turn signal high/low control for the left side. I have a few spare start buttons laying around from another project I had and they work great, but the turn signal side has me stumped for now...oh well there are more important things I have to do first lol.

Thats kinda funny, Motionpro told me i needed custom ones as well.......I am not sure that I believe them.  I think ProTeal is running that throttle on his 350.  Maybe he will see this and chime in on what he did?

The only thing I had to do with mine was fabricate a small spacer for one of the cables (I can't rember whether push or pull). I think I just used an 1/8" peice of Aluminum I had on hand. I drilled a small hole in the middle (At least twice the size of the wire) and then cut out an access line to insert the wire. I dropped that into the housing, and then bolted it right up.

Except for the hole in the center, I used a dremel tool for everything.

Well, no pics, but I got the bike mostly torn apart...i'll upload pics tomorrow. Also decided i'm gonna do the GL1000 front end swap so I won http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160169580902This
on ebay...

Probably paid too much, but it looks to be in outstanding shape and has all the important parts included.

On a side note the Parts N More wire harness I got looks fantastic! Everything matches up just perfectly.

I took some quick pics of my throttle with the spacer. The nut on the push cable just wasn't quite long enough to fully tighten down the cable. In retrospect, I probably should have made the spacer out of nylon, but it's working and I've had no fraying of the cable.

No problem.  :)  Yeah, that metal elbow just sank too far into the housing and the nut ran out of thread. Spacer did the trick. Mine is set upside down due to running stock length cables with clip ons. I had to get a little creative with my cable routing.  ;) ;D
