72 cb750 project
« on: October 16, 2007, 06:12:43 PM »
Last spring, I paid $150.00 for a 1972 CB750 K2.  The PO was going to dump it in a field as he was leaving the state in a hurry.  It did not run, had 2 flat tires.  I was going to part it out, but getting it to run sounded like a fun challenge.  A tune up + finding out the #2 carbs main jet holder was laying in the bottom of the bowl, and she started. I aired up the tires, soaked the chain in WD40 for a week to get the kinks out (It had sat outside for a couple of years) and she was ready for a short and slow test ride. Everything seemed to work, it shifted well and even sort of stopped.  The list of unreal repairs made by PO's is amazing, i.e. carb linkage ear broken on #4 carb repaired by using a finishing nail bent around the top of the carb so remaing ear would catch and pull slide up.  No way to balance carbs.  JB weld smeared on to stop base gasket oil leak.  Engine appears not to have been opened.  Are these prone to leak oil at every gasket from the base gasket on up ??   I have now torn it down to bare frame.  It is not going to be restored, just cleaned up and run.

Good deal on getting her running.  I got mine for free from my wife's uncle, but it hasn't run in 34 years!  I have it stripped to the frame and am turning it into a sweet cafe racer (something like this: cb750cafe.com)
I am not sure about the leaking as I have never had mine running, but it doesn't seem to leak anything as it sits in my garage awaiting the top end to get rebuilt.
You can check out my slow progress at www.stocker2rocker.com

Good luck and have fun.
It took 10 years but she's finally done!

This one seeps oil from the base gasket after the oil has been drained.  And has not run in 3 months.  Even my 71 BSA Lightning has not learned that trick yet.  ;D

Now that we have established the fact that Hondas can leak oil, has anyone used the complete gasket sets from Cycle X ??

I bought my 836 kit including the full top end gasket kit from them, but havent put it back together yet...waiting on some head work.
CycleX was easy to deal with, and I have heard lots of good things about them.
