Anyone used Torque plates on Honda Four??
« on: October 15, 2007, 09:33:46 am »
When finish honing your barrels, anyone use plates?
 Pros, Cons, any Thoughts..???

I can build my own, am thinking 1" alum or thicker for top and 1 " for the  bottom.. have built a few for other engines..

I am thinking a nice round , straight bore, has to help make poer..

They are used on Harley/big twin bores. Those are large, deep holes though.

Almost any bore can benefit from it. I have built a couple for V-8's and a few for HD Evolutions and iron barrels.
Sorta surprised its not being done..

I dont know, have not seen one apart lately, but would think it has a huge amount of meat around the bore..compared to most engines.

Right...I did one 2 years ago. I have always reasoned torque plates were essential with long stroke, big bore, high side load engines. Especially those with weak walls secondary to water jackets, big  bore size, high side thrust, poor clamping etc...etc. A bazillion Honda cylinders have been on horizontal hones with no problems. I've tuned local race winning bikes finished on horizontal bars. I prefer vertical actuated machines like a Sunnen or Kwikway. Who cares now ....it's a plated stuff etc. Let Millennium do it. ::)

I figured if you build a plate to mount a four block/cylinder in a CK 10 or similar, you cold bolt down, hone with roughing stones all 4 holes, change stones then reverse back across all four. My buddy has an engine shop with several hones. I can bore them on my mill.

Easy way to find out if it is needed, bolt a fesh honed barrel to a head usibg bolts, the measure with a dial bore guage..if no variance, its probably not needed.

Free hp and less friction if they are not round under torque.

I bet itworks well on newr syuff, not much extra metal on engine parts these days.

Boring on the mill.......I guess.....I'm tired.

Okay, so on the behalf of the less knowledgeable amongst us (clears throat, looks around, realizes he's amongst them himself  :-[ ) What is a torque plate?

Torque plates are used on cylinders to simulate the stress the cylinder is under when the head and cylinder are bolted up. some bore are only bolted one end , ie v-8, or seperately each end, HD shovel head, or through stus like Honda singlecam.

In some cases as they are torqued up the bores get some distortion, leading to an out of round or wavy condition. This can cause ring wear, lack of sealing, extra friction. On some engine you can see significant gains by doing this.

Conditions of a cylinder on a bench are not always the same as when in the engine..

So your cylinder would be boted betwen 2 plates while honing.
