Check out my Tank
« on: October 17, 2007, 03:59:39 PM »
I got my new tank today, and the e-bay descrpition was not all that accurate. But overall, after it gets (no I am not keeping it yellow) a coat of paint it should look great.
One of the many small details left out was how sh***y the gas cap was.
Does any one know where I can find just the cap?

Try these guys...I just ordered a cap and mounting flange from them. Half the price of other places (Airtech, etc) and seemed like they knew their stuff.

I do believe that was sold by dgfischer, a well respected member of the forum.
What are the issues with the tank that you are unhappy with?
No.

Don't get me wrong, I am OK with the tank.
But...the description on e-bay said close to new and no cracks, and the pic of the cap looked clean.
The tank, when received, showed cracks by the rear mount area, and the cap has surface rust, and is scuffed pretty good.
Plus the shipping cost vs. what the tag said was more than double.
The e-bay item number was 270171941186.
I have attached pics of the areas with the issues.
Although to get this tank new, from where "Carpy" got his, It would cost $595.00+S&H from AU which is about $180.00

I do not want to dirty someones name, especially on this forum. This place has been a big, big, help. But We all buy and sell parts and I will tell in the description if there is anything that I would notice if I was looking for this item.
But this is the second time in a week I have got burned by an e-bay auction that has not been truthful in the description. Even if they would have described the item truthfully they would have sold the item. It's the principle to me.

Nice tank - i have two of those now, one is a genuine Dunstall I'm not too sure on the other.  The caps are on Ebay too - listed as Norton Caps.  I wouldn't say the crazing in the photo is anything to worry about.  The caps don't last long - both of mine look about the same as yours - they are #$%*e pot metal.

Those are not cracks, at least not metal anyways. That is just paint cracking and the rust can be cleaned easily. As for description, if there are any questions, ask them. or ask for pics.
I bought a tank from a person here and the petcock was on the right. It was not stock as in someone had put it on instead of fixing the original one. To this day, I have not been able to use it as it always leaks and the tank was expensive.

Eldar I think the SELLER of the tank has already taken care of any issues with the tank - see 2 messages above you.....

"if it is not as described, send the damned thing back for a refund"

Cant say fairer than that. From my perspective tank and gas cap look fine in the pics shown.

I am with dg on this one burke, rather than address the problems with dg or avail yourself of the proper procedures you have aired you complaints here and frankly whether you intended to or not you may have hurt someone's reputation. I think you have also hurt yourself on this forum by doing this because now people are going to be a little more cautious in dealign with you.

I think at this point to save face you need to handle any issues with dg privately and not discuss your "issues" with it publically until he has had a chance to address this.

Wow...I can see this one getting out of hand rather quickly...

I am not looking to pick sides here but Burke didn't even mention who he got it from so it wasn't like he was trying to burn anyone's reputation (strictly my interpretation of it). I agree that he could have contacted the seller if he was bummed but how many of us have received an item on Ebay that was borderline? It's easy when the item is wrecked or whatever but when it is a close call it is another thing all together...the vibe I got from the first post was that sure it wasn't perfect but overall he liked it. To be honest I didn't read the description so can't really say if he should have asked all the right questions first or if he was mis-lead...I know how he feels when you are dying to get something in the mail from EBay and you get your hopes up and it's not what you expected or had built up in your mind.

Again, I am not saying who is right and who isn't merely just throwing in my 2 cents...

Just a few things.

I probably had 50 ebay buys where, I had a good surprise upon opening the package. And sold a few too, where the buyer was not happy till I pointed out the description..

A lot of the time though, the actual condition is visible in the pics, but the buyer fails to notice. Our eyes are so glazed over from seeing that elusive piece that we overlook things or fail to ask, maily cuz your mind is racing thinking about how good it will look on your bike.. then you go back to the pics and look carefully and oh yeah, there it is !!...but you did not notice.

Remember all this stuff is 30 yrs old, and  even NOS parts can have shelf wear..

If you think this stuff is bad try finding anything decent for a teens, or twenties or thirties bike... good luck. I bought a misdescribed Indian tank for a 31, it had rot through needed a few patches, probably resoldering, a mount fixed, but many would be glad to get a tank like that, I re sold it later and the guy was real worried about condition.. but happy when he got it.

You guys are lucky with these bike, parts are still available in decent shape..

The item is posted in another place on this site (ebay auctions) so it isn't like him posting about it is totally anonymous. I think it may have been referenced in another thread also and plenty of people picked up that the seller was a person on this board without burke posting it.

but reguardless of that....if you are happy with the item, be happy with it. If you are unhappy then at least make a good faith effort in private to work it out with the seller. Airing your personal grievances before you have allowed the seller to to make "right" makes it seem like the seller gives bad customer service which may not be the case.

Only when the seller has failed to "make things right" should you come here to air your complaints at which point the comments would be more than welcome as a warning, but if you do it prematurly don't be surprised if the seller or a bunch of people come out and say you are handling this improperly.

If Burke didn't want to make an issue of this he shouldn't have mentioned it at all. Obviously it is on his mind and he wants some satisfaction, so here is his chance. If it really bothers you that much return the tank, if not, well then shut the F@#$% up  about how you "Got Burned" on an item on ebay. I am not saying you shouldn't ask questions abotu how to address the physical problems (like how to clean up fiberglass cracks and your gas cap question and such) but just posting a one line question about a gas cap and then going into a paragraph discussion about how you think you got screwed (when you haven't tried to make things right) is just bad form.

Almost everybody here who uses ebay has gotten burned at one point or another, you are not special on that front. Most of us don't choke the board up with crap about this because usually the seller makes right.

On a personal not I have owned a fair number of these tanks (originals) as well as fiberglass works tanks, tracy tanks, etc., and I can tell you that these were not made for longevity. Even new the workmanship is piss poor and the materials tend to go to crap even when sitting in the box. 1970's fiberglass work is generally pretty crappy as compared to today. Sounds to me like you bought this just because it has become fashionable, but there is a reason carpy buys new tanks - the extra money is worth the piece of mind that comes with a new modern part, not 1970's aged stuff.

Hell, look at the photos. If I'd have bought that tank I might want to replace the cap too.

I might even start a thread asking where to get one.

Maybe even complain a little bit about the condition issues with it.

All in all it's a cool tank though, so I'm sure I'd hang on to it and chalk it up to another eBay experience.

Seriously, if the seller wasn't a respected member of the forum I imagine a lot of you guys wouldn't be jumping all over Burke; you'd be agreeing with him dontcha think? I don't think Burke acted inappropriately at all...seems to me like he's telling the truth.

Maybe the title of this thread should be, "Hey new guys...stay away from our forum if you have anything remotely negative to say about anything that can be traced back to one of our old-timers." Wait, that's too long to fit in the title bar, isn't it?  ;)

I think you are missing the point. If everybody complained about the bad deals they got on ebay we would have no regular posts. And it isn't that he has something negative to say, it is rather that he didn't say them to the right person first. If there is a complaint, take it up with the seller FIRST before you go telling the world. Reguardless of your intention,  posting in a public forum has consequences to both the buyer and the seller and should not be taken lightly - it is obviously that burke understood this because he disclaimed his posts with:

Quote
"I do not want to dirty someones name, especially on this forum. This place has been a big, big, help. But We all buy and sell parts and I will tell in the description if there is anything that I would notice if I was looking for this item."

This sounds a little self righteous and intentional to me. From this persepctive it looks like he is trying to take a subtle jab at a seller because he feels cheated. Well if he felt cheated he should have taken it up with dg first.  If he had asked what should I do, that would also be a different story (at which point most of us would have said take it up with the seller) because that shows a genuine interest in resolution and not a subtle dig because he has hurt feelings.

I would be equally critical of anybody who aired probelms like this without FIRST TRYING THE PROPER PROCEDURES AND CHANNELS FOR ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE. It doesn't matter if the member is well respected or a stranger here there is a right way and a wrong wat to do things. Plus it doesn't help the buyer, because one of the few bits of leverage a buyer has agains a seller is his reputation and if you sully that right off the bat it is going to make getting a resoution harder.

Quote
i dont see where burke jumped on anybody, all he did was ask about the tank and what our opinions were of the selling description.

actually he didn't ask about anybody's opinion on the condition of the tank right away. He stated that he was unhappy in the first line of his post, and then when prodded for an explination he gave us his opinion of how it was unfarily described. Even when asking about a simple part he was sure to make clear that it was "not as described".

I freely admit that he didn't jump on anybody outright but what he did do was be careless with someone elses reputation (whether that was intentional or not). I am not saying he is not entitled to his opinion but if he is going to do that here he is definatly going to get my opinion in return.

most of us here are buyers and sellers on ebay, and since we all like the same bikes we are going to buy and sell form each other from time to time. Isn't it better to have a precedent of handiling it privatley FIRST before stepping on anybody's toes?

I must commend dg on his handeling of this. If it were me (and it has been in the past on other boards) I would not be so civil about. He has not engaged in any arguments or shouting matches and has offered a refund publicly if the item is returned. That shows real professionalism.
